MDI/Ipod dock in armrest...

Featured Replies

Don't actually own anything made by Apple so not really applicable to me right now, but has no-one tried fitting the glovebox MDI box thing into the jumbo box armrest yet? admittedly, I don't know how it's secured, but i'm willing to bet it's only a screw or sticky connector, and therefore as long as the cable reaches to the box, bearing in mind there's lots of people who seemingly want to do it, I can't logically see why nobody's simply attached it under the armrest??

There's even a little space behind the air-conditioned bit where it looks like it might just slot in if you mounted it sideways. Even if you didn't do it there, you could simply secure it upright in the main cavity and have the lead poking out the top.

Having taken my Jumbo box out yesterday, there's nothing underneath like metal or other wiring to prevent you physically wiring and.or screwing into the insides.

Anyone wanna comment on this, as it looks pretty straightforward: I just can't see the reason why you couldn't do it, just surprised no-one's commented on it before?!

You don't need to own anything made by Apple to use MDI as there are cables for other options: such as USB drives, min USB connectors, etc.

If you mean this:

then you can't without modifying the Jumbo Box as the Golf armrest (in the picture) has the hand brake on the opposite side to the Skoda.

If you mean the pieces that Skoda use to fit MDI to the glovebox, then yes by creating a small hole for the MDI Fly lead & Fly lead trim.

Connect the MDI cable between the plugs at the back of the stereo;

Then run the cable for the MDI under the Jumbo Box - can be secured to the side of the hand brake cable;

Secure the MDI box to anything solid (such as the underside of the Jumbo Box);

Drill hole in the side of the Jumbo box to fit the MDI Flylead trim;

Connect fly lead to the MDI box and the Flylead Trim.

That's it.

Yeah, that's what I kinda said.

I know what the VW option was, and that it didn't fit cos of the jumbo box/handbrake on wrong side pullava, but the second bit you put means it'll be pretty much the same faff as sticking it in the glovebox, and so many people seem to want to have it in the jumbo, I don't understand what the issue is with just doing that and it'll look as oem as it in the glovebox, yet there are quite a few threads saying it doesn't fit in there and what an annoyance it is? There'll be no leads showing, the dock will be snug in the jumbo and you'll have access in there instead.

Can't see the problem myself. It's what i'd do. :nerd:

Does ipod stuff get charged through the same cable? If so, what stops it from pushing phantom power through to something else like a hard-drive and potentially knackering it?

A hard drive needs power too, as does a USB.

USB provides power on 2 pins and data signal on the other two.

You can't put power over the signal pins unless you short it somewhere or connect it badly.

At the end of the day, the dock cable, will still be a USB to something.

Or if like me you use the iPhone for other things as well as music whilst driving the you could do this
