`Alloygator` or something like it

Featured Replies

I'm taking delivery of my new Superb on Saturday (14th) and I've specked `Park Assist`. Now I know that with this device its prone to `Kerbing`. That being the case I've seen an advert in Auto Express for `Alloygator` which is a type of plastic ring that sits proud of the alloys to protect them. I've been quoted a fitted price of £100 which, if they work, seems reasonable. Has anyone got then fitted or knows of any personal experiences? Many thanks.

I have seen them on a friends car.

Yes, they work, but they also keep all the C**p and Salt on the rim - he had to have his wheels re conned anyway...

Surely it will only kerb the wheels if you let it.

Ultimate responsibility must surely stay with the driver.

It's an 'Assistant' so only helps you to park, if there is a threat of it kerbing you should intervene to prevent it.

Yeah you're right, it is up to the driver...and I know how it works (after some sound advice from lads here...lining up with the car in front and if ITS close to or ON the kerb, you will end up there too), but...my view is if you don't let it do its `thing`... what's the point in having it. I want it which is why I specked it...but I want to protect the alloys if I can. But thanks for your input ddyer.

As above...I really don't see the point in having it if you do that.

So if your sat-nav told you to turn onto a road that was, in fact, a railway track .....

Sat-navs are assistants, you sometimes have to over-ride them. Same with Park Assist.

Like to here from someone who actually has them on their car...perhaps no one has!

People have tried them and ended up removing them, they come loose and cause vibration so you stop and fit them back on, then they come loose again. I am not aware of anybody on here that still has them fitted from those who tried.

I had park assist on my old Superb, used it twice in 2 years. I found that I could park the car faster than it could, and without causing traffic congestion that the park assist causes due to the fact you have to drive slowly along the line of parked cars to find a space for it to work.

Alloygators sound like wheeltrims!!

Park assist is defo not for me. Before I bought my superb I test drove a demo with park assist. I asked the salesman how it worked? He said "don't even bother, it's a liability". I rest my case.

Thanks everyone. I don't think I'll bother to get them fitted..

I had a great opportunity to use Park Assist on Friday but actually forgot too. It was tipping it down with rain and visibiliy was very poor. Of course the Park assist didn't know or care but I attempted to park the car myself in quite a tight space. Did it first time lines right up against the curb with no problem but there are certainly times when it would be very useful, just like PDC.

What is PDC?

PDC = Park Distance Control = fancy name for front or rear parking sensors.

Thank you.

Remind me not to ask you for legal advice if you're "resting your case" on one flawed example. I've used mine for >4 years without difficulty or any kerbing. Kerbing is pilot error, plain and simple.

I have used park assist several times when in the city and not sure if the spaces were big enough. Keeping an eye on the kerbside mirror and foot hovering over the brake it works. I do not blindly follow any sat nav (although TomTom was brilliant in Bratislava) blindly and I do not follow park assist or even the sensors, without some input. Like ABS, brake assist and other technology, it is the driver who is ultimately responsible.

Ray, you would be very right in never asking me for legal advice. However asking a main dealer salesperson for advice on park assist is hardly flawed?? I think he probably has more experience using it than most.

Point well made, but it's the first time I've ever heard of a salesman actively speaking out against it. You didn't say whether you tried it as well as asking how it worked. BTW, a salesman saying that it's a liability really deserves some explanation and/or example from him too.

Was the salesman being accurate or saying what he thought you might agree with and therefore obtain a sale! :giggle:

I test drove a superb for a week. The demo car had park assist on it. I ended up buying an approved used superb. The sale was never going to revolve around park assist but he didn't know that at the time.

Parking is a strong point for me so I would never be interested in park assist. I have lots of experience in towing and parking even with trailers.

Garaunteed to kerb it now!!!!

I drive for a living (HGV Class1) can reverse an artic into gaps that some car drivers would not try to reverse into, but I still welcome any assistance offered - whether that is physical assistance whilst in a truck (someone watching my 'bluindside') or a mechanical assistance in a car, after all it is only assistance and can be ignored if I choose to,

I don't know about you but I am only human and therefore can not spot everything all of the time.

Park Assist is just the same as someone guiding you into a gap, it's great to have an extra pair of 'eyes' where you would otherwise be just guessing (by judgement) the gap, but ATEOTD, I would still not trust any assistance 100%.
