CR VRS Gearbox woes

Featured Replies

Well my Octy VRS CR on a 10 plate is back in the dealers for a gearbox oil leak.

This is the third time for the same problem. To be honest the dealer has done exactly what Skoda UK have told them to do,which is reseal the gearbox but on two occasions this hasn't worked.

The second time they did the job they left it with gunky grey silicone type stuff all over the joints of the gearbox.

They are now saying the end casing is perforated and they need to replace it. ETA for the part six months !.

I have requested with Skoda customer services that they replace the gearbox. But they won't do that becuse of cost.

So now I am in a not so lovely Vauxhall Insignia.

I have another problem as my Octy has a tow bar which I use for holidays and I go on holiday in three weeks. Skoda won't provide a loan car with a tow bar. And my roof bars and top box are for an Octy.

So now my holiday is in jeopardy.

thats **** m8

A quick call to the dealer to tell them this and that if you incur costs or lose your holiday because of it, you'll be taking legal advice on following them for costs might help.

Obviously be very polite and put it in the I'll be left with no choice but to...

I got a new gear box on my car, after numerous dead DMF's caused issues. That took about a week to order up, so I think it's a none issue.

If they want to, they can divert a box from the factory, it would just mean some poor sod might lose a build slot.

Not acceptable for them to just say not our problem though IMHO.

Manual or DSG?

Sorry for your problems, hope it gets sorted without you missing the holiday...

Manual gearbox . I am awaiting a call from Skoda to see if they can expedite the part.

Ah, same as mine - how did it manifest itself? Oil on the drive?

Mine had 6 miles on the clock when I picked it up in January, about to hit 15,000 and due a service in 4,000, wondering whether to mention it to the dealer when it goes in...

Well after a service by the same dealer I went to check the oil and they had left part of the inlet off. So I took the undertray off to find it and there is was.

While the tray was off I spotted the leak.

That was six months ago. They fixed it and it leaked. They fixed it again and guess what it leaked again.

And made a hash of the job.

And as if by magic now the part will be here tomorrow. So they are going to repair the gearbox again. And it will leak again.

I would be having a look myself if I was you.

I'd suggest a call to skoda CS and get an agreement that you'll allow them to try and fix it this way one last time, but if that doesn't solve it, then you expect them to replace the box.

That way you can get it all approved, such that if it happens again it's a much easier path you have to take.

Reasonable but firm.

Yep just done that thanks

Gutted to hear of your problems skodafang I hope your holiday gets to happen as planned. Did dealers not remove under tray during service and spot it themselves though? Perhaps they suck the oil out instead :( Seems silly that if they do the latter as they could miss all sorts of problems.

Good Luck.

Left part of the inlet off? How? They're meant to be fully trained 'technicians'! :o

I'm an aircraft engineer, if I leave things off, helicopters fall out of the sky! How careless can a dealership be? Did they say anything about that? :@

Next chance I get I'll have a nosey underneath - always like to see how stuff's bolted together... :nerd:

Cheers and good luck with yours!

In theory yes, but no car manufacturer ever does this, as indeed no supplier to the OEM does it. A VOR is always managed through the OES division, car plants are run so lean they cannot afford to lose even one build.

And you ought to see if there's a Superb estate knocking about that you can use whilst yours is being looked at. That should cater for all manner of stuff for holidays.

He tech left the inlet part that posts through the front grill off. I could tell as soon as I opened the bonnet.

I wish I had taken pictures of the outside of the gearbox. The sealer they used was coming out of all the joints which is expected to some degree but it looked like he had put 100 times too much on. Also there is a plastic core plug on the bottom of the gearbox which he had just plastered in the gunky stuff.

Any way part is supposed to here today. Gearbox out again Monday. They still refuse to change the box.

God help them now if it comes back and is not 100%.

All this time messing about and repairing it multiple times it would have been cheaper to reaplace the box!

Hope it doesn't ruin your holiday!

Definitely not unreasonable to be provided with a like for like car with a towbar etc if that's what your car has and you need one.

I suppose if it leaks again they will have to change the gearbox.

They definately will not provide a car with a tow bar. Got a right snotty lady from the customer services team on the phone she was adamant they would not provide a car with a tow bar.

Anyway hopefully the fix next week will repair the gearbox.

I have access to a ramp so I will be checking when it's returned.

Perhaps if you can't get a car with a towbar for a replacement while yours is being fixed (again), might I suggest you accept it's fixed when you get it back next week, go enjoy yourself on holiday, then check when you're back and a towbar isn't critical?

I base this suggestion on the leak not being catastrophic enough to dump all the gearbox oil and breakdown - a couple of drips, though not acceptable, won't be enough to ruin your holiday...

Just a thought, good luck!

Thanks for the suggestion. I suppose the dealer won't let the car go with a leaky box.

If you're claiming that it's defective under the Sales of Goods Act and requiring them to repair it as such, then they are required to provide a repair in a "reasonable time" and with "minimal disruption". Six months for a replacement part is not a "reasonable time", and if you need a tow-bar for going on holiday or day-to-day use, then ...

Part has appeared at the dealer today so it goes in on Monday. Amazing what they can do if they try !!

Of course you could always take the view, that if it's not fixed this time, then you might not notice and if you were to just keep driving it as one would expect to drive a new car and if the box runs out of oil and totals itself, then it's their problem to fix it

That's exactly what I am going to do. If it leaks again it can leak till it falls apart. they will have to change it then.

OK car returned and gearbox is fixed. But the NS drive shaft oil seal is weeping.

Not a big problem I know so I am going to replace it myself. I live 50 miles from the dealer and I simply haven't got time to keep sending it back.

Anyway at least I can go on holiday now !

Some might be of the opinion that you should just leave it as it is and drive the car until it needs to go back for another issue.
