Screws holding numberplate light unit - Size info

Featured Replies

OK chaps, there is a good chance this post will go unanswered, I really hope it doesn't :)

The screws that hold in the numberplate light - 4 in total, 2 on each unit. Does anybody know what "size" these screws are?

Due to the loss of one and the rusting of another I need to buy some. My local Halfords couldn't help, my local Screwfix didn't feel they had anything that small and my local B&Q sold me "3.5x12" screws, however they are too big to fit through the holes in the unit.

Anybody happen to know what the size actually is?

Yer I know - two hopes, but there if anyone can help you guys can :)

try a local hardware/ironmongery store or Screwfix, sorry I can't be of more use :(

failing that, will a few self-tappers, slightly larger than your screws diameter not work?

Maybe I'm missing the point here, but if I am ever in your situation, I tend to get myself round to the dealer and he will order them in - in my mind, that is the only way to get the correct item.

The thing is, a dealer is going to charge silly money and you know it! Screws that should cost 20p each, once they have a VW part number associated with them will go up to silly prices.

If it's the only option I'll go for it, if I can avoid that I will.

I've got one screw that is rusted, but I'll take that into a local DIY type shop and see if they can help.

Any time I've had to get small threaded items from the main dealer (sump bung, headlamp retainers, fuel filter bolts) I have been surprised how cheap they all worked out to be............give it a try,you might be surprised.

I've just dropped them an email....well the guy I always deal with there. Fingers crossed they will be able to find a part number for them.

You can buy fixing kits on eBay with screws as caps

According to my notes they are self tapping 3.9mm x 9.5mm. You really need to use the genuine screws as the orginal screws will have tapped the expanding nuts they screw into (maybe the lenses too - can't remember).

Screws N90914001 - £2.50 for 4

Nuts N90837801 - 60p for 4

You have to be careful in replacing these type of screws with the correct type . Some screws that screw into plastic inserts are specially designed for the task. These have special threads that have "thin" male crests to the outside of the thread and have wide female gaps in the inside of the threads. Thus the corresponding thread in the mating plastic part has wide stronger "teeth" than the normal type of thread. ( i.e the threads have a narrow flank angle ). If in doubt buy from the dealer- it could save you from having a stripped thread in the mating soft plastic insert.

One of my "pet hates" is that some dealers persist on using self tapping screws that are designed for sheet metal for fixing number plates to plastic bumpers with the consequence that they are very easily stripped.

My post (#10) is about the number plate LIGHTS.

Not saying anything about post 10, it's the post about screws with caps from ebay I was reeferring to (post 9)

Mike

I realise that, but this thread is confusing and my post was sandwiched between two 'numberplate' posts, so I thought I would clarify.

The one I saw on Wednesday (2007) has the expanding nuts in the panel. They are like little rivnuts, but they push in and expand when you first put the screws in.
