Caution when topping oil up

Featured Replies

After a 1700 mile drive around France and 6000 miles in total. My 8 month old Yeti needed a top up with oil.

When I unscrewed the oil filler cap a dead fly and a sprinkle of dust fell into the hole. Luckily there is a thin metal cover plate in the hole and this caught the bits. I suppose that is what it's there for.

So just as a reminder to others...blow out the crevice where the cap sits in the recess before unscrewing it. I've not had a car before where the cap is recessed so deep, so I didn't really think about it.

I wouldn't panic if a couple of bits get in there. That's what the filter is for.

I once left a feeler blade inside the engine of my old Felicia and it ate it with no adverse affects! lol

Another tip when filling with oil (or topping up)

Get an old lemonade (or coke) bottle and cut the bottom half off - make sure it is of course clean and dry - then use this as a funnel.

You will find that because the inside of the bottle has been treated in some way nothing sticks to it - including oil !! so after a few moments ALL the oil you poured in has gone into the engine, and when you remove it, NO DRIPS...

P.S. I too have just completed an almost 2,000 mile journey in France - towing a 1500kg caravan - checked the oil before and after - not a drop used....

Non stick bottle, I have used these for allsorts but not as a funnel

I heard them refered to as 'PET' bottles something to do with the material they're made from 'poly(ethylene terephthalate)',

Doesn't apply to all plastic bottles.

No ordinary bottle - its a M&S bottle (Millstone and Skoda)!!

Don't worry - I've got my coat!!
