bloody whistling noise

hi whilst driving home today i noticed a kinda whistling noise coming from the engine, when i accelerate and come off the accelerater it sounds like a siren, now i thought it was the turbo going, i have an octavia 2.0 tdi pd 140bhp btw, i called the aa out and they recon i have an air leak somewhere and after a little investigation said he cant find a leak or a fault with the car, now we can only rev up to 3000 revs but the siren noise is there when you accelerate and come off the accelerator..

now after the aa has looked at it its now worse, and there was no computer faults or warning lights and the car still drives the same and has full power, recently had a throttle body fitted as i was told that was faulty and then found out after that it had blown a fuse?

anyway any recommendation on wheere to look or possible problems that this could be?

Unfortunately it does sound very much like the turbo in its death throes. They often don't generate any fault codes so a scan wouldn't always show anything.

Agree this sounds like your turbo is on the way out

i know you have a diesel but i had a whistle and it turned out to be my water pump! after had cambelt and waterpump done the whistle has gone!

Sounds like it is going in to limp home mode if you can't rev above 3k - does a scan with VCDS reveal any fault codes?

You say that it won't rev above 3,000 RPM and then shortly after you say you still have full power?

A restricted RPM means the car has gone into limp home mode, this would log as a fault though and you say there are no faults stored?

If it is anything like when my turbo started going cycling the ignition gets it out of limp mode until I got another overboost condition (sticking vanes) and then back in to limp mode .....

The overboost was logged and readable by VCDS, but not with a generic OBDII reader. I didn't get the MIL coming on, just the sudden loss of power.

I reckon it's the turbo :(

i,m having a garrett turbo fitted this week as the siren noise has been getting worse in the mornings,i,m changing it now before it goes and takes god knows what with it.My local skoda garage has told me its bad bearings,so i,m not taking any chances.hope this helps.....

well took to garage today no air leak that they can see and without taking it all apart they said it more likely to be the turbo because of the squealing noise? and it sound like a flute gettin loud and quiet when i accelerate, really noisy inside the car, new turbo £876 plus vat!!!..... please help me up off the floor thats just the part!!! fitting costs too to be added!! yay so wish i chose this dam car! throttle body 2 wks ago 330 plus vat now this

yay i love my skoda!!!! and now gonna need a timing kit change on its next service in 1000 miles yay me!!!

You can get the turbo for a lot less than that, shop around.

cars done 94000 now and climbing lol i only had it 4months, obviously things start going wrong now but was happy with the purchsase price and condition, and im getting a reconditioned one now for 386 plus vat

That's more like it!

My turbo went at just over 100K so it seems to be the lifespan of a 'good' turbo.
