At 7k the engine was replaced under warranty due to spark plug failure and broken up, now the car is on 13.5k the car is in at my local dealer with the gearbox removed and stripped down, the tolerance inside the box was the main problem causing it to rattle on uneven surfaces and when coming to a sudden stop, awaiting arrival of a new gearbox which is currently on back order. In the meantime I have been given a Fabia 1.2 8v courtesy car which is a dog to drive compared to my vrs! :|

Glad I'm not the only one. Mine is also in, approx same mileage, also had probs with misfire and sparkplugs around 7500 and now is having gearbox looked at. Hope it won't be too long to wait. I've got a polo and I hate it.

apparently the electrode on the tip of the plug had broken off inside and scoured the bores in combustion chamber and lodged itself behind a valve which stretched and hit the piston..

We aren't the only ones with the problems believe me there has been quite a few that I know of and I've heard of many more within the Fabia's, polo's & Ibiza.. there was a silver fabia vrs in when I dropped mine off with the engine out waiting for arrival of a new replacement engine. It really is just pot luck really if you have been given a fault free Fabia, fingers crossed you get yours replaced because I also know how embarrassing it is to own a practically new car that rattles and clanks wherever you drive, I even have random people asking what's the rattling they can hear :| not good!

How much rattle from the gearbox?? I have banged on about this to my dealer every time I have been in with it, be it for servicing or when I get it washed or something and always get told its all normal. Are you saying you had your box replaced based on the fact it rattled on uneven surfaces?? How did you get them, the dealer, to do this??

Thanks

a lot of rattling, uneven surfaces, coming to a sudden stop, speed bumps, 2nd gear round corners in an enclosed space you could hear it echoing from wall to wall all sorts of odd noises.

I notified my dealer, booked it in for a technician to drive while I was in the car to tell him exactly what road surface will cause the rattles, how i approach speed bumps which cause it to rattle.. basically just told him how I drove the car, he then heard all the noises i hear on a daily basis. Returned to the workshop where I was given a courtesy car and was told they'd be in touch.

Left the car on 9th July, heard back today with the verdict.

Interesting, I had a technician in my car, did all the same stuff, drove around, let him hear the noise etc, got told it was all normal and sent on my way! Time for me to push the issue harder I reckon, I have all the same symptoms as you had with the rattling definitely noticeable when driving through streets etc.

I've had the car back numerous times, left the car with them for a few days then just been handed it back and told it's all in good state. However, this time they sent a technician out with me on a test drive which then he heard all the noises clearly and understood my point when I said surely this isn't right haha

sorry to hear of your woes guys :( hope you all get it sorted, doesn't do skoda's rep any good though!

it doesn't at all, I try to convince people how much skoda's have improved from there old reputation of being very unreliable then next minuting I know my car decides to break, making me look a fool lol :|

My vrs makes a clunking/rattling when going over small bumps like cobbles etc and a clunking noise when changing from 3rd - 2nd. Also if you put the car up on a ramp and grab both wheels and move them back and forward there is a really loud rattling/clunking as if something is being munched up inside the gearbox. I was told this is just the noise the dsg makes. I really dont think a car with 10000 miles on the clock should make that noise so i have just been ignoring it until it falls apart then i might get a new gearbox.

Exactly what mine did when I had it up on the ramp at work, made one hell of a noise!

New gearbox at 900miles. Not had a problem since

900 miles?!! Fingers crossed I don't come into problems once this box is replaced!

I've just been told they're replacing the flywheel. Not a gearbox issue.

Workshop phoned today to confirm the gearbox will arrive on the 3rd of August due to the long awaiting list on back order, which sadly is a Friday so the car will not be ready for ultimate street car at Santa pod that weekend unfortunately :|

Just wondering about the more troublesome VRS's, is there a pattern to where they were built, when they were built etc?

I can remember years ago the MK3 Ford Escorts had a bad batch that were rusting out quickly, they were associated with being built somewhere and not properly treated against rust (or maybe that was just a rumour?)

Faults come in various forms.

Design or manufacturing faults, parts supplier manufacturing or all combined are common.

Use or maintenance or lack of can pick up on these or cause them to show or develop worse for some but not others.

Skoda/VAG need to come out and be honest about any problem or particular drivetrain manufacturing plants to give peace of mind to the majority of owners/buyers.

History is full of vehicles that show Design or Manufacturing faults through time,

Toyota had this and they blame it on Parts Suppliers supplying inferior parts.

Ford got it wrong with a Pigment and the Lacquer back on Escorts and MK 2 Cortinas.

Red Paint Pigment is still not right with all manufactures.
