Tyre pressures

Featured Replies

Hi all, just getting the car ready for a holiday, which entails me using my roof box and trailer .

On re checking the tyre pressure sticker in the fuel flap it says I should have the following pressures when fully laden 2.3 bar on front and 3.2 on the back . This is 33 and 46 psi which seems high on the rears?

Roomie is a 2007 scout on 205/45/16 tyres .

Any advice on the rear pressures would be appreciated , thanks .

rears at 3.2 are correct, my personal opinion is that the front pressure is quoted way too low on the filler flap. I use currently 2.5/2.5 for normal driving and 2.7/3.3 for full load incl 4 people, luggage in boot and a towbar box.

Assuming it's a 1900cc diesel on factory tyres, http://www.tyre-pressures.com specs it as 29 psi for front and 31 for rear, although that must be for the unladen option

Thanks for that, I'll try 2.7 on the front and see how I get on, the car will be fully loaded with a roof box and a 500K trailer .

I use currently 2.5/2.5 for normal driving and 2.7/3.3 for full load incl 4 people, luggage in boot and a towbar box.

Would i see a benefit in less tyre wear if i were to increase my tyres to 2.5bar from current 2.3? Or is this only beneficial if fully loaded?

There is some benefit in fuel economy from higher pressure, but I think reduced front tyre wear is biggest benefit from going to 2.5front/2.5rear under normal conditions. If the rear is too bouncy with unloaded car, just reduce pressure in rear tyres by 0.2bar or so. Note all luggage in the boot (plus towbar load) sits directly on the rear axle, so if you have full load please do pump up rear tyres to 3.2, or they may blow out on motorway.

For motorway driving, it makes sense to up the pressure anyway.

I must say when I looked at front tyres pumped to 2.3 they just looked wrong, as in underinflated and bulging out too much.

I checked the pressure with 2 different gauges so it was really 2.3. Handling was also poor. At 2.5, the ride is still soft enough and the handling is much better, plus the front tyres look "normal".

Finally, for a non-scientific measure of the fact that 2.3 is a bit on the low side, even my other half noticed that front tyres are a bit low, the car is mushy in corners and she demanded more pressure. This coming from someone who once drove Mk1 Octy with left rear tyre almost completely deflated, until someone in the street pointed it to my wife.
