Cambelt nightmare finaly over

Featured Replies

After having my timing belt changed at a independent garage 6 months ago i have been back there 3 times and been told the timing is spot on. I knew it was not as the car had lost its pull and mpg. So I contacted trading standards who gave me advice. After starting to get white smoke on startup I decided enough was enough and booked it into the skoda dealers to have it the timing kit redone and asked for printouts of the timing values. Well car is sorted now pulls how it should where it should. The belt was half a tooth out. Synco angle value is now 0.55KW. Half a tooth out can be anywhere from 5.6 degrees to 10 degrees out on the cam position and it wont inject fuel in the right quantity at the right time. The garage has now offered a refund on parts and labour but im still out of pocket and the car was running half a tooth out for 6 months!. Anyway i knew i was not going mad and its just nice to have the tourqe back :).

Glad you got it sorted.

I have read of this happening a few times before and happens if they don't use the proper locking tools etc.

Nice to see ya sorted -Nice.

Going back a lot of years to first cambelted car I ever had, and one I did a lot of engine work on.The more cars become complicated, more tools you need.

My old 2.0L Vauxhall FD required one tool to get cam alignment right. Bit of string. Hold across the timing marks on cam pulley and crankshaft pulley, and all should line up. Even later Cavaliers had this test. Changed the head gasket on one a few years ago ,same test before & after fitting cambelt ,no problems .

Thanks for the replys guys. Yes it is so important to use the proper locking tools so the cambelt change is best left to the Skoda main dealers i hate to say. Just make sure you tell them dont ask them for a print out of the timing data after so you know a proper jobs been done. I also got them to change the engine mounting bolts and asked for the old ones back to be sure, the said they had never had to change these bolts before, but as they are shear bolts i insisted as i have read a few threads on them breaking and the engine dropping.
