Help needed with rear lights

Featured Replies

I have (looking at the car from the rear) only the right side fog light working and none of the parking/running lights. The bulbs in the parking lights were already blown, and I bought new bulbs to replace. Nothing changed after the new bulbs installed. They haven't blown again, they just won't go on. The bulb itself for the left fog light works fine, I have tried it in other sockets. Both brake lights, reverse lights and indicators work fine. License plate lights working as well.

The fuses seem all ok. Though I haven't played around with switching them to check..

What obvious thing have I missed to check, before taking it to the shop?

This might sound stupid, but do you have the lights properly switched on from the switch? If you only have the ignition on and use daytime running lights you might not have the rear lights on at all.

I tried all the possible combinations I could think of. Even with highbeams or dipped lights on, nothing comes on in the back. Went as far as to check if the handbrake on was automatically causing the lights to go off, as some cars did 10 years ago. Still nothing. :wonder:

I know when i got the car initially not all the running lights worked, but some did, and they would come on when the parking lights were on. (I haven't got DRL per se)

The Car comes pre-programmed for only either side (right) Fog-Light to work. To enable them both, Ross-Tech VCDS should help.

Fog light is the one that is working!

A blown fuse cannot be recognised by naked eye all the times. Check the fuse / fuses again or then the light switch may be worn / erratic.

That's a good point. I only have right side working. Other side never turned on.

I switched fuses around and still the same. Don't think it could be the light switch as it operates both front and rear lights, so wouldn't all fail if it were the switch?

A friend is bringing over his multimeter tomorrow so will check if there's any power going to them. failing that, might visit the mechanic

When I had my front windscreen replaced my reversing lights stopped working and the bulb blown warning light came on. It turned out to be a loose connector in the engine bay and nothing to do with the bulbs, fuses or switches.

Hmm.. well I couldn't get the multimeter so had to take it to the garage.. they found 4 blown rear bulbs and replaced them and it worked again. I don't get it as I had just checked them and they seemed ok. 2 of them were the ones i had pulled out of the front to replace with bluevision ones. so no idea why they all blew. Had alternator checked but no surges or anything else suspicious, and since then the lights have been fine.

Were those two from the front the same type as the rear ones? (I really do not know if they are, so please do not be offended) If not then a minor sort circuit may be caused by them resulting four blown bulbs. Another that comes to my head is the case that you may be touched the bulb's glass with your fingertips and the thin fat film that stays over there blew the bulb and then an instant sort circuit etc etc.

They were the same, but I may have touched them.. didn't have gloves so used a napkin but very possibly i touched them. Good to know for future changes
