Tyre storage solutions

Featured Replies

I see continental recommend that tyres on rims are either stored stacked flat and moved about every 4 weeks or hung. I currently have 3 winter wheels in the garage 195/65r15 tyres stored flat. I've been think about getting some winter wheels and tyres for the other car unfortunately the summer wheels are 275/40r20 (roughly 36kg each!) x2 and 315/35r20 x2 (roughly 42kg each!) and wondered if anybody had come across anything to hang these on the garage wall as they will take up too much room stacked (1.180m high!).

We put all ours stacked in the loft. Is that a possibilty?

I think I might have clear some space in garage. They will be too heavy and big to put up the loft.

I tend to store mine on a ladder in the garage. It keeps them off the floor and they are easily rotated independently every week or two.

I've also stored them in a stack on top of a pallet to keep them off the ground, but they still take up a lot of space and are less easily rotated. The ladder fits nicely down the side of the garage, or between cars in a double garage.

I have a couple of ContiSport WinterContact 275/40 R 20 sat redundant in the garage if you want them. It would mean meeting on M6 somewhere and making a donation to one of my preferred charities. Tyres still have about 6mm on and Ican forward photos.

I might be able to use the wall mounted one for the Skoda's tyres though :) that'll make more room for the other wheels!

They also appear in ALDI and/or Lidl occasionally. I use them for some 195 trackday combos for my Clio, but they will only take small sets upto 225s - so nothing substantial. Handy if you've gone for skinny winters nevertheless.

An advantage of the ladder approach is that you can secure each wheel with a bike lock if you have security concerns. Also just keeping three together is an advantage, especially if the fourth can be utilised as a spare until needed for the next season.

Thanks for the offer but already paid a scary amount for a set of 19" winter wheels / tyres from the dealer. They were quite a good price really and they will keep them until the end of Sep and then swap the wheels over and deliver the summer wheels back to my house ( they would store them but it would be £100!) and repeat this as long as I have the car.

I bought the wall hanging tyre solution http://www2.westfali...yre_storage.htm arrived on Friday. Would have been disappointed if it had cost more - but came with all wall fittings - and looks sturdy enough. The bar (or rather tube) is covered in what looks like the water pipe insulation and it was a bit of a snug fit to get it through the wheel centres until I modified it with some duct tape. it's still quite difficult to get the wheels on and off especially if you have mounted quite high up. The bar can be adjusted closer or further away from the way to allow for different wheel/tyre sizes. So the Skoda's three tyres (4th in the car) are hanging off this now.
