Considering change from Fabia Vrs to Octavia Vrs - Advice please!

Featured Replies

Hi all.

Basically my situation is thus:

I have had a Fabia II Vrs for 15 months now. Although it is a great car and the DSG is a technological wonder I have never really got over the lack of ultimate control you hve with a manual. In short I miss driving the car as oppossed to the feeling that its driving you.

Anyhow I've just contacted my Skoda dealer to get some quotes on a new Octavia Vrs Petrol/Diesel.

I should have around £500-£1000 equity in the Fabia and with Skoda's £500 deposit (along with No VAT) hoping my monthly payments wont go up too much on a 3 year PCP deal.

I do around 8000-10,000 miles a year mostly on B-Roads with a round 25 mile trip to work and the very occassional motormay/A road blast.

I appreciate most of these questions have prob been asked before but here go's:

1. Does the Petrol require Super-unleaded or can it run normally on 95ron?

2. Given my driving needs (See above) what MPG am i likely to get in the real world from both petrol/diesel versions?

3. Has anyone got the diesel (with low milage/b-road useage like mine) and has this caused any problems with the DPF?

4. Ultimately I know my milage may not be a natural fit to the diesel but i like the idea of the torque and feeling of speed/power this will give even on my shortish 'normal' journeys. One of my issues with the Fabia is that as I never really get to use the top end power (perhaps over emphasised by the lack of ultimate control a manual would provide) I feel like i'm not enjoying the car properly. Do you think this will improve with a manual octavia and if so which version???

Any advice/thoughts would be greatly appreciated by you with your own experiences.

The Octavia vRS runs on ordinary 95 stuff.

My petrol manual version does 25mpg at worst, rising to 35+ on longer runs.

I don't think you'll get much sportiness with a diesel manual, although I dare say a dsg one will make quick and effortless progress.

The petrol Vrs engine is smooth with plenty of low down torque and also revs effortlessly.A great engine.

The manual gearbox is also a good one, light and positive.

1. already answered above

2. I do a simllar mileage to yourself, after 19 months of ownership I've covered 14000 miles and my overall average is 47.5mpg and it's still getting better with virtually every journey.

3. I've never had any DPF problems and I have a daily commute to work on A and B roads of only 16 miles.

4. I can't comment on manual as I've not driven one however, I'm delighted with my DSG and it suits the diesel down to the ground (the 6 speed DSG is different to the 7 speed found in the Fabia; I was torn which to go for and had long and numerous test drives in both) and lastly I'm still surprised sometimes by how much torque there is and mine's standard, it's very smile inducing.

I only do 18 miles round trip to and from work. Mine is a manual, I get 47mpg and I've has no problems with dpf.

My only advice is get the petrol. More fun in my experience. Each to their own though.

Mine is a Petrol, no DPF problems, no smoke, 25ish around town 40ish on a run driven nicely,

DSG box a wonder of the universe all wrap up in a Yellow shell.....AaaaaaRrrrrrrrrr,,........ BLISS

ive had the 2010 cr diesel and mainly potters around the town with the odd 200mile motorway journey and up until 12000 miles the best average i used to get was around 46mpg. When the car had done over 15000 miles it started to average around 52mpg driven reasonably quick. I love the torque and the power delivery but you are forever changing gear :-(. I have ordered a new cr diesel to collect in september as i do love the diesel having owned the petrol aswell i think a lot of people with petrols dont do real world figures as i could only ever really get 28mpg.

regards Mike
