Should I get a remap ?

Featured Replies

Hi everyone, just came from my local independent specialist having had a bit of light suspension work, new dual mass flywheel and clutch etc and they've offered me a remap from Quantum for £199, just wondered what you guys think of this ?

My car is a 1.9Tdi and has just hit 165,000 miles. It's recently had a new turbo, egr valve, 2nd timing belt and is running quite nicely.

It's the 105bhp model and I do fancy the extra bhp the remap offers, any thoughts ?

No offence mate, you but asked for advice and it was given. Now you ask the same question again, disregarding the initial advice. Essentially it sounds like you just want a remap but need someone els

  • Mine has only been blocked in the same way yours has by the way. I was told it was not necessary to actually remove it. And then the economy remap effectively tells the car there is no EGR valve. T

@ 165,000 miles i would let it enjoy its golden years & run it as its been all those years.

you dont have new rings or big end bearings on your list, best get value from what you have just spent.

I couldnt agree more!

Cheers for the advice guys, does it put that much extra strain on other parts ? I guess it depends how you drive it ?

A remap will always put extra stress on the engine, turbo, clutch etc. I had my 130 TDI Superb remapped for 230K miles. I only recently had my clutch changed.

So you did 230K trouble free miles after a remap ?

For 1.9, most likely post-remap problem is leaking head gasket leading to coolant expulsion, normally after a few years. But I would not remap a very old engine and expect long durability for this reason.

Clutch is less of a problem unless you drive it like crazy. VW clutch linings are quite hardwearing, in fact if you have a car in motorway use you may find that the release bearing wears out faster than the clutch plate. Clutch becomes a problem only if torque is ratched up to unreasonable level causing clutch slippage, but by then I'd be more worried about bottom end bearings.

Yes it's been remapped all it's life... No problems so far.

Why don't u go the usual upgrade like

pipercross panel filter

De-cat

and enjoy extra few hp + extra torque

I asked the same guy at my independent specialist about the decat and he said I would see a much better result from the remap.

Under normal circumstances I would put this down to the garage making £199 from the remap but this guy has proved on more than one occasion that he's willing to help me save money.

I'm really unsure what to do, I have until Tuesday to decide because I'm back in there for a couple of little jobs.

De-cat u can do ur self if u wish to safe few ££

Just order right size pipe (2.5 inc I think) cut cat ur one from both sides replace it with pipe and make little cuts on both sides of the pipes then clump it to exhaust. Job done

I did that on few of my diesel cars and make a differents on acceleration and make about 3 to 5 Mpg more

Filter with p&p = £38

Pipe with p&p = £20

labor = priceless

total= £58 for suck and blow derestriction

And when u ready to map it this little things will help run ur motor better

Pipe on ebay stainless steal by the way

Many thanks for the info, it certainly sounds cheaper and safer to go with a decat instead of a remap.

Is it legal to do this, I mean are there any issues at MOT time ?

I have passed my MOT just last month

I have no pre-cat and no cat

could you put together a list of things out bought and where? I think lots of people would appreciate that, including myself.

Any more advice regarding the remap folks ? I have to decide by tomorrow (Tuesday) morning. I'm kinda 80% against it due to the advice already received but I'm still a bit tempted unfortunately.

Have any of you had a quantum remap? There are 3 levels offered, power, economy and somewhere between the two...

No offence mate, you but asked for advice and it was given.

Now you ask the same question again, disregarding the initial advice. Essentially it sounds like you just want a remap but need someone else to agree with you.

It's your car, so it's your choice at the end of the day, regardless of what anybody says on here. Your mechanic is the only one to see the car, hence in a better position to offer advice, why not take his/her advice?

Yeah I see what you mean, that's the trouble though, my mechanic says yes go for it, a couple of guys here say not.

I wouldn't dream of disregarding their advice, I appreciate it very much and it's those guys who've made me think twice.

I just want to make a more informed decision and to learn a bit more about the pros and cons of specific remaps and the process in general, even if I decide not to go for it.

A remap will ramp up both the bhp and torque output ... which may lead to increased workload for other components, usually the clutch, seals and higher turbo pressures. Clutch slippage seems to be the biggest problem to be fair. If they're not in good working order they may need replacing/repairing as a result. However in my experience, most people don't seem to encounter problems from their initial remaps ... but it's something you have to bear in mind.

Personally, I'd still favour the advice of your mechanic. They've seen the car and will have a better idea of it's condition and history.

Let us know how you get on.

I will let you know and thanks for the extra advice...

Do it but only economy type, so it will not push your turbo too hard and motor will servive another few years but Do the filter and De-cat before the map. So your map can work better and more Mpg will be achieved

so after all of that

you should get. .........

Extra 20-30 bhp and 20-30 torques and 10-15Mpg more.

I was wondering if the economy type might be best for that reason, thanks again mate, much appreciated. I'll let you know how I get on...
