Should I get a remap ?

Featured Replies

Do it but only economy type, so it will not push your turbo too hard

That's sound advice from a mechanical point of view. I'd be so tempted for the power option though. It depends on what you want from your car I guess.

This thread is turning into the male version of a soap opera. "Tune in next week to see what LJH888 chooses."

No offence mate, you but asked for advice and it was given. Now you ask the same question again, disregarding the initial advice. Essentially it sounds like you just want a remap but need someone els

Well after all that we didn't have time for the remap due to the clutch and DMF taking too long... Back in Thursday so I've got plenty of time to drive folks mad with remap related questions :)

Thanks again guys for taking time to give me advice...

Pls let us know. . . . .

Just had my remap done folks and all is well, car feels great now, much smoother and more responsive, I went for the middle option, somewhere between the power and economy option . Feels like a new car now with the new clutch and DMF too.... Very happy so far...

Think I spoke too soon, my cars started making an awful rattling noise on startup and it's a bit reluctant to start at all.

It was doing it a bit the other day intermittently after the new clutch and DMF but before the remap. One start would sound ok, the next the rattling noise. It seems ok once it's started though. Today though the noise has got much worse and at one point wouldn't start at all for a while.

The only work done at the same time as the clutch and DMF was a service, any ideas guys ? Many thanks...

Timing belt jumped a tooth, perhaps?

Timing belt jumped a tooth, perhaps?

Would this be due to the belt tensioner do you think ? If so should I have the belt changed at the same time ? It had one at 79,000 and again at 140,000 because the bumper was off for something else, it's just hit 160,000 now.. Many thanks...

A slack belt could cause it to jump a tooth. Not certain if it would cause a dash warning light or not to be fair?

Have you stuck your head under the bonnet at all? Preferably with the engine running.

By itself, the remap shouldn't cause anything to break really. Problems usually arise when the remap is done and then the driver ends up flooring it everywhere for the next 3 months ... which is to be expected I suppose. I mean, no point having it mapped to give more power, then never using it. I'm not trying to say it's your doing, just trying to ascertain if it's due to heavy driving or work you've had done.

I'm fairly sure it's nothing to do with the map, it started happening just after the install of the clutch and DMF, I mentioned it my mechanic when it went back for the remap 3 days later but at that point the symptoms were very slight and wouldn't occur at all while he was listening. It only really got bad enough today when I couldn't get it to start at all and the noise was awful. Once it's running though it sounds ok. It's back down at my local specialist now, awaiting news... It's never been driven hard either before or after the map..

Thanks for the reply...

Yeah, my fault regarding the map, I didn't read your post as fully as I should have.

Well it's not that the belt has jumped a tooth then being as your issue sounds like it's getting progressively worse. It may not be related to the work you had done, then again it'd be a bit of a coincidence. Can't see the clutch causing the problem from what you've said. That only leaves the DMF I guess.

As it turns out it was the battery, put a new one on and the noise has gone and starts normally...

I was wondering if the economy type might be best for that reason, thanks again mate, much appreciated. I'll let you know how I get on...

Why not go for what I have, a small thingy that plugs into the OBD, you can switch the map between performance, economy and original.

I achieved this on the economy map on a 96 mile round trip.

How much do they cost ?

How much do they cost ?

I got cousin's discount 'cause it's my Cousin who does the remaps.

I'll ask him how much.

Ok mate, thanks. Saving for my next splurge at the min though : wheels and suspension :)

Jesus! Were you driving at exactly 55mph for the 96 miles? :giggle:

Just noticed you've got a '2' next to the average MPG readout? What is that? When I switch across the menu I only get a '1' for the average readout

The 2 is because you can record 2 averages, press the trip button once to flick between 1 and 2.

And yes I drove about 58MPH behind a lorry (less drag) for all the motorway miles.

Barely ever touched the brake, rolled in gear to a stop, read the road WELL ahead, and ignore drivers tailgating you 'cause you're going too slow.

Remember this isn't standard. It's had an EGR delete and an economy remap.

Edit, just read your fuelly MPG are you only averaging 36.2 in your Superb?!

Oh and the remap price with OBD thingy is £375.

That makes sense, and thanks for the trip swith tip. But does it just automatically record your last two journeys?

RE Fuelly. I've only just started doing it and I did a few partial fuel ups which knocked the figures about. My 'Last average' after a 1,000 mile trip to France and back, with a mix of short journeys when we were there, resulted in 47.5 MPG, which is more like it. Still nowhere near 69 MPG though

I've had a standard AMD remap but how does an EGR delete improve fuel economy?

Cheers

PS Sorry to OP for jumping on his thread but I guess he can get some relevant info from this

EGR valve delete stops the exhaust gasses being recirculated into the engine so only fresh air gets burned with the fuel, so better MPG + economy map.

Happy days :)

Alan16ac is right in what he says, it does improve power and economy as the engine is burning only clean(er) air. The EGR works to lower the combustion temperature of your engine thereby reducing nitorgen oxide emmisions. The thing is, there's a trade off because over time the introduction of dirty air can cause sooting and the PH levels of the oil to fall .... both of which lead to rough running and decreased engine life.

There's no real need to go the whole hog and get the EGR software delete + blanking plate. You can just leave it in place and seal the vacuum hose with a tapered screw. Well that's how mine was done. Keep meaning to get the blanking kit, but it's something I never seem to get around to.

Mine has only been blocked in the same way yours has by the way.

I was told it was not necessary to actually remove it.

And then the economy remap effectively tells the car there is no EGR valve. The MPG is amazing.

That's impressive.

I often get mid/high 50s but rarely break the 60mpg barrier on long journeys ... but I tend to drive the car rather than coast along. Also it's a 130 pushing out around 175bhp so that's likely to lower it further. It's generally accepted that the indicated mpg readout is usually a slight over estimate by about 5-10%. The highest I ever got to was 72mpg, but it was only a 10 mile journey. On a decent trip, around 100miles was ....
