lighting around dials, asr, rear demister and fuel cap button have just gone off?

Featured Replies

Hi all, Wondering what I can do to find the problem. Was working fine up until now just got in the car to go to work lastnight and it was pitch black apart from radio and the headlight indicator light in the cluster. The headlight turn knob thing lights up when they are off and then goes out when you turn it on.... all warning lights etc are working it's just the stuff controlled by the dimmer switch that seems to be gone. Is there a bypass of the dimmer that I can do to test it?

any ideas? Obviously I haven't just touched the dimmer accidentally. I've checked over the fuses. Not sure exactly what one governs the dash lighting? a bit of rain did get in the window onto the area around the vent yesterday but nothing excessive.

Any help really appreciated.

Certainly sounds like the dimmer control. In other makes of car I have had the track on the dimmer control fail and it could be the cause here but less likely as the variable resistor does not carry the full lighting load. It feeds into an electronic circuit which then supplies the switch lights.

You can push out the whole assembly after removing the main lighting switch. I suggest substitution is the easiest way of testing unless you are electrically/electronically inclined.

Also check to see if the glovebox light works. If not then your problem is Fuse 3 (5A) which feeds the glovebox and the the switch lighting. If it does light, then it looks more likely it's your light dimmer.

Thanks for the reply. I couldn't be 100% sure that the glove box light was working, it isn't now anyway. Just hooked it up to VCDS and in the convenience module it states that the instrument illumination is 0.0% no matter where the roller switch is. Any ideas?
