Need help/advice, garages are stumped!!

Featured Replies

Been having problems with, what I can only describe as a sqeuaky gear box, or so it seems...

1st Garage - Tunbridge Wells - Had no Idea!! :finger:

2nd Garage - Crawly Down, said it was a dried up gear box mount, and they re-greased it and that solved the problem for about 7,000 miles. :D

... then squeak came back ...

3rd Garage - Saltdean (Brighton) said that it couldn't be a dried up gearbox mount because they aren't greased in the first place, but that they would replace the gearbox mount anyway... low and behold that didn't work!! :finger: :thumbdwn:

... moved to Streatham ... :thumbdwn:

Taking car to Garage tomorrow in London and they seem to want to start the whole process again... anyone had any experience or know what the problem is so I can get it repaired once and for all???:D:thumbup:

Its starting to get really annoying now! As you can emagine... :finger:

Thanks Guys.

Alex.

Can anyone help?

mmmmmm No sorry

Bit more info?...........

Does it sqeak all the time

or when you change gear or only in certain gears ...when you accelerate/brake/turn left or right corner all this could narrow it down..

If it stopped when they greased the gearbox mount I'd say that was a good place to start looking

Instead of just greasing the mount, they should have replaced it as quiet a lot of wear will have taken place when the 2 dry surfaces were rubbing together.

I had a squeak which was happening between gear changes or on/off throttle movements. The dealer checked all engine mounts & exhaust but couldn't find anything. They said bring it back in if it gets any worse - which it did.

I checked to see where it was coming from & physically rocked the engine back & forth. It sounded like it was coming from the gearbox area, but couldn't see exactly where because the airbox was obstructing my view. I thought it was noisy gearbox mount.

Took it back to the dealers & explained the above. They removed the airbox & rocked the engine back & forth & discovered a loose clutch pipe which had come out of it's clip. They clipped it back in & no more squeak!!!

Thanks guys, all very usefull, it sounds the same as Jon TDI's problem similar noise at the same times. It is much worse when its cold, when the engine is turned on on a cold morning and it vibrates as it does, it happens a lot then, also when the car has been driven for about 20 mins it is not as bad so I assumed that the rubber on the mounts warms up and then its not so loud, if it was the same as Jon TDI i assume it would be loud all the time?

Yeah, the noise was the same regardless of engine temp.

It's worth a look though. Hope you get it fixed, I I know how annoying it can be! :(

Thanks, i am going to get it checked again ill let you know. :D

Should never, ever take a car to be fixed at Crawley Down. They are useless because they do too many brands.
