Tyres..Old chestnut

Featured Replies

Sorry to raise the old chestnut of which tyres to fit but times do change and new products appear. I need two new fronts for my little 1.2 HTP 22.300 miles but the rears are fine. My concern is:-

1) The Bridgestones fitted are woeful in winter so would like to change brand

2) I only do around 6000 miles a year these days

3) I do like same tyres on all 4 wheels but could get another 12 months from my existing rears

4) Will it be OK to have different brand tyres on the front for a while then get 2 more later to match

5) It will be obvious from my questions cost is a factor and I would like to pay no more than £70 each.

Any suggestions will be great as I need to replace them in the next couple of weeks. Thanks guys.

I used Blackcircles.com for my last tyre change and have priced up our current cars in anticipation of a change in the future. It gives you your local fitter, about 10 tyres to choose from (more if you have a common size) and I think rates them each.

By the sounds of the mileage you do and the car it is, £70 would probably get you something pretty good, but there should be plenty of choice.

I put P6000s on my last 2 cars at the front when they wore and found them to be good - cheap enough, good performance and I had them fitted to a car I owned years ago, so they have been around for ever.

The current thinking, and what some tyre places are saying is that your part worn backs should go on the front and then your new tyres should go on the back...so as to avoid unexpected oversteer.

Personally I'd always want the best tyres on the front on a fwd car,I would hope I can correct a rear twitch, and I want to have good traction and avoid terminal understeer causing me to go straight on at a slippery corner.

You could try all season tyres, although some will say they are a 'jack of all trades master of non' but on an average performance car like the Fabia HTP then they are fine. My lad ran some of these (Goodyear Vector 4Season) on his previous 03 Classic HTP and they worked without drama no matter what the weather.

He's recently bought a 09 Fabia 1 HTP to replace the Classic and intends to go with all season tyres again when the current set of standard 'summer' tyres are worn out (newish Toyo's front, original Conti's rear, from memory).
