Suspension Question

Featured Replies

Sorry for asking what some may consider a basic question but I don't so here goes!

Seen lots of reference to suspension mods with some using lowering springs and others going for coilovers. Looking around it appears to me that springs are used in conjunction with original or replacement dampers, while coilovers are a combination of the two. Coilovers also appear more costly which is fair if they replace more.

Some retailers/ manufacturers indicate that the stock vRS dampers are good so just need different springs.

Can someone please clarify if my assumption is correct and what the realworld differences are. I'm keen to improve the handling and to some degree the look of the car by lowering it from the laughably high position it has as stock. I'm not into track days so don't need variable settings and the like.

Thanks

Yea you have the basic idea, springs are gd enough for daily road use and many people find these gd enough, i will be going down the springs route when i find the money.

I see you've already got the RARB which should point the car into corners nicely.

I think I've read that the Eibach "official" springs are good in that they are progressive, they should only firm up when necessary and still retain a reasonable ride quality,so I would go for these.

One of the worst things that the chav brigade do to cars is to fit low, hard springs on an old car with shot dampers, you then get both terrible ride and handling.

However, you can fit the springs and, with your dampers being relatively new and firm, you will probably be OK.You will soon know if the car does feel wallowy and, if so,I would then fit some good adjustable sports dampers to go with the springs.

If you're not into track days I wouldn't bother with coil overs.I understand some of the cheaper ones are poor quality and don't last long and good ones are expensive.

Main difference Is the adjustability of coilovers which sponge don't give.

Had a quick look at them and for the Eibachs they seem quite pricey, even more than the Skoda supplied Eibachs, which I believe are exactly the same. Also various people are doing good deals on springs at present. But due to warranty issues I am more inclined to go for the Skoda Eibachs. That said with the car currently parked up at APR HQ I am tempted to get them to fit the VWR ones, just not surehow good they are (springs not APR).
