Fabia VRS SE lumpy/resonates when idle...almost bouncing!

Featured Replies

Hi all

My VRS SE has a strange habbit......when I stop at light or a junction, the car bounces or resonates at a low frequency. The whole car 'thuds' and its very nausiating. The tachometer does not seem to fluctuate and it doesnt happen all the time.

Anyone had the same problem/know were I should start looking?

Cheers

Does it do this at a specific rev range when idling? What does it rev at when idling? Mine was diagnosed as having a sticky throttle pedal. Think that's the reason why it sometimes revs at over 1500 revs when it's just idling. I solve it by sticking my foot behind the pedal and lifting it up. The revs then drop to about 1000.

Either that or it's just a characteristic of the PD engine. It can be quite agricultural next to a modern CR engine.

Should be idling around 800-900 rpm.

Does it go away with the clutch pressed?

Check your timing with VAG COM. Mine had a terrible lumpiness on idle until I realised the timing was massively advanced. Timing can slip as the cambelt ages. A simple adjustment of the camshaft sprocket may be your solution.

Thanks for the comments.

The car does not seem to idle slow or fast, nor is it erratic its pretty stable at 800rpm. I have looked at the link regarding the timing which may be an issue as I notice the fuel economy is not what I expect, I drive it responsibly yet only seem to get 400 miles from a tank, and thats at least 300 miles on motorways.

I have also noticed I get a large plume of grey/white smoke on start up...so wonder if this is related?

Cheers

The small puff of smoke on start up is normal, not huge choking plumes lol. I would seriously have your timing checked, it's very simple if you have access to VAG-COM and could be the source of your problem. Also worth checking is your cambelt tensioner which is visible from the top cambelt cover. Mine has de-tensioned itself or was not tensioned correctly by the mechanic who installed it and that was the reason for my timing being massively advanced. Since re-timing the engine it runs like an absolute dream, no more lumpy idle and much improved fuel economy.

I dont have access to VAGCOM.....would it be a case of taking it to a dealer or are these available on eBay etc?

Thinking it may be the timing.....fuel econ is not great to be honest.

Cheers
