Large roof mounted anntena / aerial - What is it for?

Featured Replies

Guys,

I'm after a bit of help please.

Went to look at a used Octavia Scout today.

It has a couple of factory fit options including the multi-function steering wheel and Maxidot.

I also noticed it had an unusual anntena on the roof, more like you would get if the car had sat nav (Columbus), however it has a standard Bolero headunit.

Is this an indication that the car has Bluetooth? If not why is this larger aerial fitted?

Is there an obvious way to check if BT is fitted just by looking around the car?

Thanks!

i have sat nav and bluetooth and thats the ariel i have

Bluetooth, no nav and that is the same aerial I have.

Pal of mine commented it looked the same as the VAG DAB aerials but I dont have DAB...

I'd find it unlikely that:

1) You need an aerial for bluetooth. None of the Nokia BT kits I've had used aerials. (all the cellular comms are done through the phone itself. AFAIK only the old "plug the phone in" kits used aerials as part of the signal booster)

2) You'd have an aerial for something at the front, at the back of the car.

It could be that it did have Columbus at some point (Being honest.....would you leave one behind if your next Octavia didn't have one? ;) ;) )

the bluetooth in the octavia is RSAP as well as HFP ,so it requires the ariel when connected via RSAP as the car basically becomes the phone and just uses the simcard from your phone. using HFP you are still using your handset to make and recieve calls.

Here in Germany there are a couple of non navigation fitted Octavias fitted with the shark fin aerial. This aerial contains the gps unit. It must not be that the plug is also hanging around the back of the unit. But it will have the plug to attach the lead under the roof.

I have Bluetooth in my car and it has the regular round ariel

I had the rSAP only Bluetooth before I upgraded and that's the aerial I have. It's because with rSAP your car becomes your phone and signal is improved. Look under the drivers seat, that is where the Bluetooth module is located.

I got the same antenna on my 2012 octavia which has Bluetooth but bolero stereo only

If BT is fitted, then the phone option should appear in the Maxidot menu and offer the ability to pair a phone.

Depending on age of car, the unit may only accept rSAP phones, so find a Nokia handset if you want to test it.

My 2011 Scout has both rSAP & HFP. I can confirm that the previous version of this aerial had 3 connections, radio, gps and phone as I fitted one to my Octy

HTH

It will be bluetooth. It requires an external aerial. The GPS aerial will not be contained in there unless you have columbus.

My car came with Bluetooth and Bolero and this is the aerial i have.

Mine is the same and I have the midi port, I assumed this was to boost the signal of the phone when connected. now it appears it may be standard fit on all new 2012 cars?

Bluetooth is in the car, not on the roof.

The shark fin is the GPS module, as the older ones had in a round form.

As posted above, if they dont have normal aerials anymore, they will put the GPS ones on the car. Just as when they changed from green to red calipers on the VRS. :hi:

Not totally true my old 2008 VRS didn't have the bigger aerial I guess it was cheaper for them to use one upgraded part on all new cars rather than producing a second one.

wrong, as I explained above, Bluetooth antenna is on roof in the fin.

If you have either Bluetooth, Columbus or both you WILL have this aerial.

I rang the dealer up and asked him to check.

Yes, it does have bluetooth (no sat nav).

It sold this morning though, the search continues!

Thanks to everyone for your help!

Don't get hung up on the Bluetooth functionality - it's a peice of the proverbial to fit

Ah, but do you have the option code in your book/boot to prove it was installed in the factory?

Factory fitted as all vRS octys come in to Ireland with BT as standard.

What is the code in the boot?

I will double check it tomorrow IF the rain dies down :wall:
