Window Regulator - Nightmare

Featured Replies

Hello Folks

I've just spent 8 hours with a kit from eBay to repair the front left regulator and what a nightmare.... Window had become jammed making it difficult to take out but finally got there only to find the repair kit was of terrible quality.

I've fitted it but a plastic clip already has a split in it, they are too tight on the rails despite me encouraging them with a ton of grease and the central winder doesn't give a smooth action anyway. So I'm pretty p*ssed off!

Does anyone know if Skoda tend to stock these kits and what they charge to fit? I'm that fed up I just want to take it to them (in pieces) and say stick OEM on that and re-assmble. I've seen a few forum posts on here while looking at guides and have seen prices as high as £170. Surely not?

Has anyone else had a bad experience with a cheap eBay repair kit before or am I just unlucky?

Just get a whole new regulator from Skoda with rivets for approx £90 so you know it'll fit first time, the hardest bit was taking the regulator out, refitting was quite simple :)

Great thanks for your reply, maybe I'll go down that route (although mine is bolted on which makes it easier) if I know it's going to work! For £90 I assume that includes the two metal bars with the pulleys on them but they're permanently fixed to the whole plate on mine so how does that work in terms of changing them?

I don't know whether to risk ordering another, but more expensive eBay repair kit or just bite the bullet.. Hmm

Bolted on, lucky you as the rivets are a ball ache to drill out !

I'd go for a whole new regulator from either Skoda or euro car parts instead of another fixing kit which may not even fit again !

The complete regulator is what your currently unbolting, the metal carrier with the window regulator (2 bars) on the other side.

Don't forget to reseal the bottom to stop water leaking inside the car ;)

Oh right, so If I grab a new regulator I'm actually getting the full metal plate with the 2 bars and other bits (pulleys etc?). If so then that's a no brainer, I'll be doing that. I did note it's about £43 from ECP but the picture doesn't include the metal plate or metal bars.

Good point, it's on my to do list anyway and has been for over 3 years... I've even got the sealant and replacement door clips so there's no better time to fix the slightly leaky door seals.

Where did you get the kit from - I've done mine three times now IIRC and the kits I've used have been good quality from an outfit called OSCO (in Turkey I think?) They are fiddly the first time working it all out but once you've done one it gets easier...

I nearly bought an OSCO kit but I ended up buying one £2 cheaper which was a slight mistake. Anyway, euocarparts regulator here and fitted but I've one problem, can anyone advise?

I can't refit the bloomin lock rod. I've seen MoggyTechs post of ensuring the dot is facing upwards and rotating left but I'm not having any luck. It doesn't seem to grab the hole it's supposed to sit in. I thought maybe fit the regulator flush but now this has left very little room for fitting the lock rod so I think that must have to come out again?

Thoughts anyone?

The Lock Rod should look like this? The end part that hooks under the plastic latch and into the plastic hole seems too short?

It does go in there, unless you've snapped something (it's hard to see in the second pic, but it does all look intact).

There's no realt easy way of doing it, other than loosening the bolts holding the lock mech on a bit so you have more play. Things can get very fiddly when you go down that route though!

Thanks TimFok. I was worried it might be a case of loosening the lock mech. I don't believe I've snapped anything so I'll have to give it a go. It's already fiddly enough!

The lock rod is a complete pain in the arse !

I got my regulator set in place then the stupid lock rod fell out so had to take it to bits again !

I can imagine that happening! Did you manage to sit your lock rod in place without removing the door lock R1chard? I've already had the regulator out twice now attempting to refix this in place and am losing patience fast! I can't get the rod end to sit in the plastic hole of the door lock, it seems such a poor design :wall:

FOR ALL THOSE HAVING TROUBLE WITH DOOR LOCK ROD AFTER REPAIRING WINDOW WINDER

If I remember when I repaired mine with a kit from Ebay. The Lock Rod fits into the lock plastic lever after the first bend on the rod. So you are not trying to keep the end of the rod into the plastic lever, and then assemble the door card etc.The small bend on the end of the rod is there to stop the rod coming out. You put the rod into the lever ,and rotate the rod ,keeping it in a position where it is when the door card is on.Then refit the door card.

Regarding the plastic replacement parts, they are the same material as the original ,and are very brittle,so care must be used to fit them-

Hope this helps others with the same problem!
