Octy to Superb

Featured Replies

Hi All,

New to this forum but a regular in the Octy II as I own a FL Vrs CR DSG. I've just arranged a test drive in a Superb Greenline II for when mine is in having its 2nd variable servicing carried out at the end of the month. The dealer has said I can have it all day which I though was great as you normally only get a few miles and then expected to part with £000's.

Reason Im looking is although I am averaging 50mpg out of my Vrs on my daily commute, I'd still like to get a better figure (yes im very tight). I was wondering what you guys who actually own a Greenline II get as an average and what you think of them. Do you feel longing for more power or does it easily keep up with normal traffic. My driving style is a gental plodder. Stick to 70mph on motorways and 60 in national. I try not to accerlate erratically (although its hard not to in the Vrs!!).

Cheers in anticipation

Have you considered an electric car or a hybrid? Or did you find (like me) that they didn't meet the rest of your needs (e.g. boot space, price etc.)?

  • Author

I have wondered about hybrid, like the Citroen DS5 but like all hybrids. Mega expensive and the Prius is no more economical that mine with the kind of driving I do

Absolutely. It's like they don't want you to buy an environmentally-friendly car at all. Hmmmm, conspiracy theory anyone?!

Richie, your not thinking of changing your car again are you?! You're getting worse than me!! Had mine more than 18 months this time!

You looking at the Twindoor or the estate?

Hi Richie

When you say your daily commute, what does that involve?

I can get up to 65mpg realistically sticking to the speed limits and no harsh acceleration on cruising. You ar looking at low to mid 50's around town.

As for the power. I had a Volvo S60 2.4tdi that was rapid but drank the juice and killed me on company car tax.

From a standing start then obviously the Greenline wins no prizes but putting your foot down when on the motorway or overtaking is not a problem, you soon get to know where you need to be in the rev range to get the pull.

Hope you enjoy your test drive

a vRS owner who is concerned about economy....?

My wife's uncle has a 1.6TDI Octavia and can get 70+mpg - but he drives it properly for economy, 56mph on the motorway, etc.

Yes Gibbo, looking again!! This one I had almost a year now. Thinking of twin door

My commute involves about 20 minutes of dual carriage way, sat at between 60 - 70 depending on amount of traffic, and then a further 20 minutes on a B road between 40 - 60, again depending on traffic. My Vrs is averaging about 48 mpg on this trip which is why Im hoping to improve on it. Im not an impatient driver, I am happy to plod along, but its just so hard not to over take in the Octy!! I am really looking forward to my test drive, seems like I booked it ages ago now and still got another week to wait yet.

So far I've tested Volvo V50- 54 mpg on dual carriage way, BMW 116d 65mpg actually on my daily commute, Volvo V40- 54mpg (Vrs 46mpg on same route), Superb 1.9 105 estate- 45mpg dual carriage way and Octavia 1.6d 54 mpg (same route as superb). Testing a Honda civic 2.2d today.

I know it may seem wierd a Vrs owner concerned with economy but I love the look of them compared to the standard Octavia. Also when I bought the car I was doing approximatley 10,000 mile a year all motorway miles. Im now doing an average of 1700 miles a month and it is a large chunk of wages going fuel a month. Im not a company car buyer so it all comes out of my pocket.

Well, finally had my test drive. I was given a Superb Estate Elegance Greenline which was a very nice, comforatble, and well specced motor. I did find the 1.6 a little bit sluggish on a few inclines and had to use 4th gear a bit more than normal but once you get used to that it was a lovely drive. Especially for it size. Did a drive of a mixture of A and B roads and averaged 64 mpg, then repeated the route in my Vrs and did 49 mpg. I've done a few calculations and each year in fuel and tax I will save £2019, which over a 3 year period is £6056 and thats before I save on insurance too. Not a bad saving and I'm sure fuel prices will continue to rise so that will only become greater.

Only problem yesterday was that the Skoda computer system was down so they couldn't see what stock they had coming through so no deal could be done. Thinking of SE spec as this seems to have all that I need, apart from bluetooth, although the Elegance comes with 0% finance. Cant wait to start haggling. If theres anyone out there with a Greenline SE Id love to hear what you think of it, and if you have any rattles yet. I hate rattles.

Cheers

Richie, sounds good. I don't suppose you happen to remember what revs it was sitting on at 70mph in fifth?

Hi FocusZtec

I'm afraid I didn't notice the rpm, I did notice that it was alot quieter than my Octavia though.

Well after some searching by my dealer, he found 2 Greenline SE's for a September delivery. One white without Bluetooth and a petrol blue with the Bluetooth. After weeks of looking a the brochure, I really liked the petrol blue and this was my favourite colour. What a coincidence that they could get this colour with Bluetooth. Got a great deal, even more than the VAT free offer so placed my order thismorning. Really looking forward to getting it now. My new car is in Germany docks and just waiting to be shipped to the UK. Next 2-3 weeks could be a long wait!!

That's great news, the petrol blue is also one of my favourite colours on the superb, good going! :-) Who was the dealer btw?

I'm very much in a similar position to you, I bought the vRS becuase it looks so much better than the rest of the range and was pretty frugal considering the 170BHP.

I also do a high mileage commute (130 mile/day) averaging around 48MPG.

I haven't driven the Superb 1.6TDi but have driven the Seat Ibiza Sport Tourer 1.6TDi. It was a nice car but I missed the ability of the vRS to get me past slow moving traffic.

If I could convince myself that the power of the Superb Greenline was enough I'd probably take the exact same route as you!

Was the 64MPG on the Superb from the onboard computer or a manual calculation?

Despite my best intentions to do 60MPH my speed often creeps up to 75MPH. If you can still achieve 64MPG at those speeds then that would be a significant saving over a year...

Richie from a previous post on the same question. I have an Elegance Estate Greenline

'Okay then

Managed it tonight

Approx. 2100rpm at 70mph

Approx. 2400rpm at 80mph

For info, redlines at 5000rpm'

Hope this helps

So glad I managed to get this colour, been looking at a few on Skoda Approved Used website and they look amazing. Plus you dont see many around.

Thats exactly what I was concerned about, I hate getting stuck behind people insisting on doing 30-40mph in a 60. With the Vrs i did a lot of overtaking, (because i could) but alot were probably unnecessary. Driving the greenline, yes it was noticably slower but I was expecting that. The 64 mpg was from the trip computer and compared with my Octavias trip computer.

I had to buy now why the VAT offer was on, also with 3 years servicing included. Wanted to jump Octavia ownership before their prices crash due to the new one coming out next year.

If you dont change soon i'll keep you posted with my ownership thought s and performace with economy.

Why did you buy a vRS in the first place?

Why did you buy a vRS in the first place?

Because I like the look, always have. Had 2 Elegances, a Mk1 and a Mk2 and always fancied the Vrs. It looks so much nicer than a standard Octavia and it looks so much classier inside with the dark interior. Even better than my last Elegance that had leather seats. Unfortunately due to the extra 11000 miles I'm doing a year now it's just proving to be costly, especially with the DSG. Looking forward to more mpg, £140 less road tax lower insurance and hopefully, rattle and squeak free.

Just because I don't race around, doesn't mean I don't like the look of sporty cars.

Jeez, some of these numbers are impressive - I get about 28 in my 4x4 estate!

True, true - but there still doesn't seem much point in owning a car with the vRS's potential if you only pootle about. Why not buy the L&K with a dark interior?

Anyway, I'm only jealous because I don't have my Octavia anymore, although I am growing to love the Superb :)

For a bit more 'umph' you could always look at the 2.0CR 140ps. Not as economical as a Greenline, but pretty nifty. I'd expect 52-55mpg on the route you describe.

Update, sold my Nova GSi yesterday so had a pocket full of cash. Thought rather than stick it in the bank to only get it out in a couple of weeks tune I'd just add it to my deposit. Asked for an update on mine and it on the boat from Germany so I'm hoping the seas not rough for the next few days.

Can't believe I only ordered it a week ago, it seems like ages. I'd hate to have a factory order date!!

did you work out the total cost to change before you did this?

if you only look at the fuel/tax/insurance costs, you will generally be fooling yourself, due to the price difference between your current and new car totally negating all of the other cost benefits.....................

I did yes, the way I look at the value in mine has already been wiped, I'm never going to get it back and with the Octavia III just around the corner it's soon to take a massive tumble. I've also lost fairh with my Octavia as in the year Ive had it it's been back for 3 warranty repairs so far. I'm dreading the DSG packing up next. Due a DSG gearbox oil change in a couple of months too. The deals on the superb were "superb" and I've always loved them. So if I can cut my monthly outlay on fuel, tax and insurance, whilst getting free servicing, why not.

Just been told my Superb will be with the dealers on Monday now. Shame I'm away working all week and wont be home till Friday now

The diesel vRS is on the market for exactly the type of buyer like Richie. One who likes the look and equipment of vRS and wants better economy. You don't buy a diesel vRS for its potential/performance. Not wishing to offend anyone, but the vRS would need to shave a couple of seconds off it's 0-60 and in gear times to be considered a performance car in today's terms.
