Vibration felt through the steering and foot pedals

Featured Replies

Appreciate that you will generally get some amount of this as a matter of course. However of late both my wife and I have noticed this vibration thats above the norm with her 2010 60 plate Fabia Elegance. Most noticeable feature being a subtle rocking side to side of the steering wheel if you just lift your hands away momentarily. This rocking is not a constant either, the amount can vary depending on the type of road surface and speeds from around 45 +.

Now my son also has a Fabia II but a late 09 model 1 trim and take it down the same roads and there is none of the above with his car. Have popped it into the dealer and got the usual and (probably expected from them) NFF and also tried the local tyre fitters who a pretty good. They suggested checking the balance for a start as it's the easiest thing to check; was slightly out on the fronts but a re-balance made no difference. Also resorted to running it on our extra set of steel rims and 195/55 R15" winters (both all round and the 195's at the front with the original 205's at the back) but its still there.

Beginning to wonder if its a brakes issue, although theres no judder from them. However fuel consumption has not been that good of late but that could be just a coincidence.

Anyone come across this or has any definitive thoughts :wonder:

Checking the balance was OK, but probably cost you.

Did he check or have you checked the tyre Pressures?

Maybe needs the tracking checked, which is normally free, but then costs to get it adjusted.

So into the Dealership for a warranty check. Could it have had a little Kerbing to knock it out?

then also,

Best ask to get them checked.

Did you take the car for a drive with a technician to demonstrate the fault to them?

Tyre pressures are checked regularly, tyres not showing any signs of uneven wear across the tread and the wheels have fortunately not been curbed.

Wife went out in the car with the service manager (only person free apparently when she called in) but said he couldn't detect anything out of the ordinary (mind he's also the same chap who said there wasn't a fault with the PDC module on our Yeti when there was; took five visits form him to 'find it' and another three to fix it).

Much appreciate thoughts so far,

Brakes? Are they warped ?

Brakes? Are they warped ?

That was what I was wondering but theres none of the usual signs to sugest this, such as judering under braking.

how about the caliper bolts? Nice and tight and no play?

Plumber, it sounds as if you have a drive shaft out of balance. Under the right conditions, speed, load etc, kerbing can cause this as can a nice big pothole. When we used to balance wheels dynamically rather than statically it used to often solve the problem. You don't need a shaft to be out by much for this to happen. See if you can find someone that still balances dynamically to see if it solves the problem. My bet is that it will! If not get the shafts checked off the car, but this will cost. Often, shafts are balanced with stick on weights, you could look to see if you have a clean mark somewhere on a drive shaft which might indicate you have lost a weight, that is if Skoda balance like that. I don't know if they do and I haven't looked at mine but you can rebalance most shafts using that method. Of course there are other things that will cause it, but it's obvously not the wheel balance that is out. I take it there is no play in the wheel bearings on the front. Could be a CV joint starting to go, but they make a clicking noise too when cornering. The other thing to check is the inner drive shaft doughnut to see if there are signs of wear. That would also affect balance too. Let us know how it goes.

Depends how it's dynamically balanced.

ABS makes it a tricky task if it cannot be switched off because the 'system' will read wheels moving at dirrefent rates & will try to slow the faster one.

How so? The engine and ignition won't even be switched on.
