Bean's VRS - dead turbo :'(

Featured Replies

Hi folks, just picked up my Black Magic VRS earlier last week, loving it so far!

Picked it up looking a little worse for wear (previous owner was a game-keeper, remains of dogs/fags/mud all over the place) so it was needing a good detailing.

Just over 100k, FSH with Cruise control and heated seats.

It also came with a lame Blaupunkt aftermarket stereo, so one the first jobs was to get that out and install my Kenwood, running a usb cable to the glovebox.

The only downside was that he seats were pretty filthy, so as soon as I had it home, I got out the steam cleaner and set to work. Cleaned half the dash and the part of the passenger seat when the cleaner packed-in. argh. Off to Morrisons to get a Rug-Doctor!

The filth that came out the seats!

After the clean: looking much better. There's a few wee bits that have dried dirty/i missed, so I'll get the steamer on it once we have a replacement.

Overall its in decent condition. It's littered with stone chips and light scratches, but that's small stuff, stuff that *most* people wont notice anyway.

I'm not planning on doing too much to the car, but...

The to-do list:

Carbon-wrap the chrome grill insert (vinyl ordered)

Going to get some PB Blackhole, and Nattys Wax to get that black looking deep (and hide some of the scratches/swirls.

Coilovers (theres a knocking coming for the rear - looks like the rear struts might need replacing)

Uprated bulbs all round

Tidy-up/re-paint brake callipers

Wheel refurb

Repair holes in drivers seat material

Tint windows

Replace badges (hopefully there'll be another Pastyboy GB soon! http://www.briskoda.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/#EMO_DIR#/emoticon-0110-tongueout.gif )

Speaker upgrades

Basically... just get it cleaned up and looking sexy http://www.briskoda.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/#EMO_DIR#/emoticon-0100-smile.gif

Looking forward to your comments and suggestions,

Bean

Wrapped the chrome part of my grill the other day

I'm probably wrong, but I figured it would be easier to wrap in a non-flat colour than matching black? haha

Need to get some silver bulbs for the indicators next.

Got some PastyBoy badges on the way too :)

Had a chat with the guys I bought the car off the other night, they think it might have been remapped before they bought it, but don't know what map.

Apparently it leaves their mkIV GTTDI pd130 in it's dust "like it's going backwards". No proof though...

Having not driven another vRS, I can't confirm this - Is there any way to prove their suspicion without a rolling road?

Cheers

Some nice Touches there. I like the grill wrapped. Other than getting it on the rollers the only way you would know is drive a known standard one and see how much faster yours feels.

the carbon vinyl looks spot on i say, matching black would blend in to much I think. keep up the good work.

If there's a massive torque spike and 2k revs then nothing after 3.5k then its standard :-P.... That's a very rough measurement for you.

Thanks for the comments guys :)

I'll try and pay more attention next time... fairly sure theres power all the way through.

First seems a little lame some times, but then maybe that's the ASR cutting power to the wheels?

Here's some Instagram's. saves me getting the camera out hahaIMG_20120813_205434.jpg

- Needs lows, but I can't decide if I want to get a cheaper set of JOM coilovers, or save up for something that will handle better...

I won't be going for stance (just yet), but I'd like to sensibly close up the arch gap, and make it more firm in the corners. dont even care about driving comfort :)

any suggestions?

Just fitted my PastyBoy specials that arrived in the post this morning :D

Love them! Excellent service too :)

Waiting to give the car a good wash and polish before I stick the one on the back.

Slightly worried about the carbon wrap loosening with the engine heat and losing my front badge too :/

Nice looking fab, black is the way forward.

7a7u8a9a.jpgI've kept this thread quiet since I started, not intentionally, but rather because whenever I save up enough cash to make some modifications to the car it breaks down and any and all funds get thrown into garage bills!

Since I bought the car about 17 months ago (17? it feels like much longer than that!) I've covered 15k and replaced the following at a cost of approx. what I spent on the car in the first place:

1x Steering Rack

1x PAS pump

1x front brake calliper

2x rear brake callipers

1x timing belt (to be fair, I knew this was coming up...)

I'm involved in a Paint Warranty (rust) claim with Skoda Inverness, that they seem to be doing everything to avoid.

and I'm pretty sure there's something else I'm missing.

And now, it's broken down again, and I'm being told that I need a new turbo and intercooler (plus some piping and gaskets, I'm going to get a breakdown of the problem tomorrow). The provided quote being so high, that the garage is recommending that I don't accept it as the car isn't worth it! Though, I am looking around, and I WILL (probably) be getting it back on the road.

So, with this in mind, I'm looking for a bit of advice/ some opinions from you wonderful people of Briskoda, should I:

a) Fix the car properly with a pd150/hybrid turbo and uprated SMIC/FMIC and keep it. I've now replaced everything that can/will go wrong and it'll run smoothly for another 100,000 miles.

B) Fix it cheaply and trade it in for something younger and feasibly less problematic

c) Something else...

With all this said, I do love this car. When it's been running its been great and I've enjoyed every second of it. Any car I buy in the future is going to be hard pushed to make me as happy as this does (even the heated seats still put a smile on my face on a chilly Highland morning!)

So, Briskodan's is it worth keeping, or has this dog seen better days?

Cheers,

Bean

Hard decision! I have had the same situation with my octavia although all the problems with my octavia have been silly little thing so didnt get in the way of mods but was a general pain in the ass! I nearly got rid couple months ago but ended up keeping it finally got it running properly with a race n75 valve it stopped all my boost problems it has been perfect for the last month but ive now decided its time for something newer, if it wasnt for me wanting something newer then i would keep what i have so i personally think imo if u dont generally really want a newer car an your only selling because of the problems you have had you should keep it as, as you say you have done every big bit on the car now :)

Personally, I'd see what the damage is. If the turbo debris has made it's way to the intake then it could get expensive! Ideal time to put a hybrid turbo on it though.

I hope it's not as bad as they say.

The reputable VAG garage I put it into don't seem to want to touch it with a ten foot pole - I've been given a mammoth quote (their 'policy' is that they don't fit non-new parts, even if I supply them!) and told that it's not worth it.

They're now saying that it sounds as though material might have made it into the engine, so IF they fitted a new turbo it may still not run...

So, I'm taking it to another garage run by an ex-Audi mechanic to see what's what on the inside.

I'm excited at the prospect of going hybrid, but I'm trying not to get my hopes up too soon :(

So... the news is in. My turbo is dead, but the engine lives to fight another day!

I've spent the weekend weighing up options, and have come to the difficult decision that once the car is back on the road, it will be up for sale.

I've loved every second behind the wheel of this car, but I'm going to go another direction - maybe to something a bit more classic and with tartan seats

Hybrid it and stick with it!

Refurbed PD130 and OEM SMIC arrived and are in the garage ready to fit :D

If it was my own timescale and I could wait for a well priced FMIC kit and Hybrid to turn up, I would have gone for it, but in my desperation to get it back on the road I have gone down the MUCH cheaper route.

If the vRS can win me over again I might think about keeping it and adding more boost further down the line.

For now though, I'm keeping my eyes open for Mk2 GTI 16v's and bargain TT's...
