Problems with Power Steering

Featured Replies

Hi

I am currently experiencing issues with the steering on my 2004 Fabia VRS.

I goes really heavy and is really difficult to steer to the right more than the left.

I have replaced the alternator pulley in order to try and rectify the problem but nothing has changed.

Does anyone know what might be causing the issue?

Thanks for reading.

Lucy

New Battery needed probably, being a 2004, mine went recently, same symptoms.

Yep as above . You need a nice new battery! Common problem but easy fix .

I had a new steering rack on my 2004vRS - so it might not be the battery...

I don't think that its the battery, as I had to replace that about a year ago.

I was thinking that it could be a sensor within the steering. Not 100% sure tho.

See the steering thread at the top of the Fabia tech section. Lots of helpfull advice there. Could just be a battery earth lead.

I was thinking that it could be a sensor within the steering. Not 100% sure tho.

That's what the garage that fixed mine said in the first place...

A sensor would cause either lumpiness/twitchiness in the assistance and/or the warning light to come out.

You can rule the sensor out by reading with VCDS and turning the wheel with ignition on. If the reading from the sensor jumps around or doesn't read propery it will be the sensor.

Check the simple things first.

Make sure you have battery light illuminated with ignition on and engine switched off.

Check the battery negative terminal and earth strap to body of car.

Check there is sufficient fluid in the steering resevour (battery out and it's under there)

Check fuses on top of the battery box for any signs of corrosion or cracking

Hi ... I have problem with power Steering and its very difficult to find low cost repair for it in Finland, MY car is Skoda Fabia 2002 classic 1.4. Initially my car power steering light was on and off ... and in the morning or when car engine is cold then power steering does not work but once i start driving ..it start working .... but after month it suddenly lost...

I check with 2 mechanics

First one says ---your power steering control unit is broken and you need to replace whole system which cost you wooping 1200 euros

Second one says - you power steering wires are corroded and need to replace ...some important wires can be replace within 300 Euros and if you need to replace whole wires it will cist 1200 Euros ..

Dont know whom to trust (both are authorized service center) and i have already spend 200 euros with each one to identify problem ....

Please suggest, what can i do ??

Check the above mentioned things first that should narrow it down a bit.

I have experienced exactly the same problems, probably just needs a new battery, they don't last forever.

DB.

I've just got mine back from a mechanic, first check was fluid. Fluid's fine, battery was new in march. Twit fit want £35 to plug into diagnostics to see what comes up with it

And have you checked the other things posted above?

Phil

It's in for diagnostics on Tuesday at a family friend's garage. As I've just got it he's going to give the car a once over too to check everything else is good :) Judging by the symptoms I reckon it's sensor. The previous owner had customer protect silver on it, so up to £500 of claims so that's being transferred over into my name

And it's the power steering sensor. So that's going in as a warranty job, and as it won't be £500 (touch wood!) I'll get it's iffy rear wiper and driver's front electric window sorted too!
