Columbus Fitting Requirements?

Featured Replies

To get full postcode searching you will need to upgrade to at least 2764, which is more recent than 1164 (see third post in http://www.briskoda....firmware-query/), and you will also need v7 maps or above. It also gives you larger SD card support and voice control although the latter is a bit of a gimmick really.

I upgraded to 3814 from something similar to 1164 not so long ago. I had no problems, but moving to 3814 wiped my maps and music as it re-partitioned the hard drive. It didn't matter to me that I lost my maps as I immediately installed v7 maps to get full postcode searching anyway, and my music was still on my SD card so that was no issue really. I'm not sure if maps would get overwritten moving to 2764, but I would plan for it to happen.

Which firmware you go for will depend on a number of things. One issue is the revision letter of your Columbus, which is the letter after the part number on the sticker. Mine was an older A revision, and so the firmware I needed was specifically modified for these units. The other issue is the maps and the way points of interest are held. If the maps you get hold of are version 7.2 or above, then you can go to firmware beginning with a 3 or 4 and the POIs will be available to you. However, if you go for v7.1 or less, then I believe the POIs will only work with firmware beginning with a 1 or 2 (I found this out the hard way when my v7 POIs didn't work on 3814, and had to upgrade to v8!).

This is a useful resource for firmware etc: http://www.my-gti.co...and-information.

Jrw is offering you a disk so if I were you I'd make my decision based on the version of that. If you want a v7 disk of your own, there's at least one in the parts for sale forum!

Right an update on the maxidot situation, a big thank you goes to cjb for use of his VCDS tonight and we got it to work again by disabling the BAP protocol (after about 20 mins searching the menus trying to find it! lol!). So it all works on the maxidot again.

I'm not sure whether to update the firmware or not atm, as I don't know whether it's worth the risk/hassle. Will have a think over the next few days. Oh yeah and I'll also post up photos of the fitting of the unit in a sec, better late than never! :)

I have to say, this is literally the easiest modification I have ever done to any car!! Literally a case of undoing a couple of trims (just popped off, easy-peasy), undoing 4 screws and taking out the old head unit, adding the magnetic GPS receiver onto a piece of metal behind the dash, plugging it all back in, putting the trims back on and bobs your uncle! That is pretty much every step that I took!

Anyway, here's the photo's:

The old head unit (old pic from when I first bought the car as I forgot to take one today!)

First bit of trim popped off.

Old head unit removed.

The little black box is the GPS antenna, magnetised to the car :)

The unit starting up for the first time (couldn't wait to play, that's why the trim isn't back on yet! lol!)

Just checking the DVD function works. And yes, DVD in motion is enabled, so passengers can watch DVDs whilst the car is moving!

And finally, the unit all in with all of the dash put back together again.

I have to say, I'm completely over the moon with the results. The unit is superb, the screen is great quality and really responsive to touch, and it just does everything I want! Definitely worth the money!!
