so, we all know that the standard stereos sound crap, so i replaced all the speakers with fli coaxials (same size as standard) and it made no difference whatsoever.

so, thinking the headunit must be the cause of the terrible sound quality, ive just stuck a nice pioneer cd player in and surprise surprise, it still sounds pants. is the wiring really so bad or am i missing something here? it literally sounds exactly the same as factory fittted stuff. even with bass on low the speakers are still frapping. dont really want to stick a sub in the boot as i need the space

Can't help much but I have an Alpine headunit on standard speakers and it sounds great in my car. Only once it gets really loud do you get some weird distortion but frankly my ears hurt at that sort of volume and you literally woudn't be able to hear a car horn if it were jammed into your ear. Never got the frapping either...I really ******* hate that.

The HU is the weak part of the stock system. That said, I have a pioneer HU and Apine units and crosser units in the front doors and my inside of the external skin of the doors have been lined too.

When my gets too loud parts of the door start to librate (passenger door). I need to keen to check for loose bits inside it!

The standard stereo sounds a lot better once you've done " the rear tweeter trick" . There is a guide at the top of the octy page I think.

Guys,the first thing in car audio is Soundproofing - The best one is Dynamat (easy to fit and very light). Don't buy Speakers like FLI or EDGE if you don't want to fit Amplifier - Waste of money !

lol, my point was that the speakers are frapping on low bass, if i turn the bass up its going to be worse

You fitted coaxial or component speakers? There's a big difference.

coaxials, couldnt afford decent components unfortunately.

anyway, i just removed all speakers and headunit, checked all wiring where possible and refitted everything and now it sounds pretty good. dont know what it was but sorted now woop woop

If youve slipped up your + and - it will have it all sounding odd mate ....

Worth a double check just to rule it out pain in arse i know

Glad you have it sussed bud

No wonder it sounds carp. The treble now is down at your feet so will sound totally pants and have no soundstage at all. Swap the front speakers for some decent brand named -component- ones (such as JBL, Alpine - NOT Fli) and youll be sorted.

the head unit is without doubt the worst bit. I bought a pioneer DEH 7300 BT when halfrauds were changing their displays (£65 ) I also bought a set of matched speakers for the front, PIoneer components and coaxials for the back as I already did the rear tweeter trick. I have not got round to fitting the speakers yet but the head unit with the standard speakers is a massive improvement. starts to break up when the volume gets over 35 though so do need to get round to sorting the speakers soon.

I'm saving up for a old Sony ca 900 or m800, think they look loads better than the headunits on sale these days, always sounded good too. Another plus point is they came with 3 pre outs as standard while these days they seem to come with 2. That way I can put an amp for front and rear and control a sub lol

majority of HU out at mo are lacking in the SQ department, unless to pay silly $

i got a pioneer deh-3400ub headunit. bought it primarily because the display light up in 5 different shades of green and i am fussy like that. i think its a good headunit for the price (89.99)

i had a sony hu and fli speakers sounded carp so replaced the speakers with pioneer ones, still sounded a bit off so I put the Standard HU back in and sounds great

lol, I'm not interested in the usb as I don't own a music player. Can't be bothered with a memory card and have a 10 disc player stashed in the cupboard from when the low life nicked my ca 900 a few years back lol

Onew problem with the standard setup is down to the door lining, rather than the speakers of HU. It seals the back of the speaker so the cone can't move very far on low frequencies, hence the lack of bass. If you cut some of the foam out, it will let the speaker breathe a bit more and use the whole door cavity as an enclosure, rather than tiny space it had before. It does make it sound a lot better, but the headunit is still lacking a bit.
