Help identify my noise please :)

Featured Replies

Right, I've had AP coilovers on for about 18 months now with no problems and I've been wound down about half way.

Recently, I noticed slightly uneven front tyre wear on the insides (which is to be expected), so before they became illegal, I've swapped the front and rear wheels and wound the suspension up about 8-10mm, as I'd scuffed the sump gently a few times and it was getting to be a nuisance having to constantly worry about it etc.

Anyhow, since I've swapped the wheels and lifted it, when I drive at any speed, there is a dull 'hum' from the front. It is a rotatory hum i.e. the slower I go, the slower it hums. I've heard of rubbing shafts if you're low, but I can't work out why it would rub on something if I lifted it?

There is no wheel wobble, drifting, swerve under braking and I'm at a loss as to what it could be.

Any suggestions from tech-related people would be great.

Thanks in advance :)

If someone came in a garage and described the humming noise, i would say "probly the wheel bearing"

Did you notice it at all before swapping the wheels and moving the coilovers up?

Nope, no noise whatsoever prior to me adjusting and swapping the wheels around. I suppose it could be a bearing and just a coincidence, but it started immediately after I did all the changes. My next plan is to change the fronts individually with my spare to see if that changes anything I think.

Could just be the tyres wearing / rubbing on the road.... My goodyear eagle F1's are excellent tyres but when driving with the window down at low speeds you can hear sort of a humming noise i guess.

You can check the bearing by jacking the car up, holding the top and bottom of the wheel and pushing/pulling each side, listen for any knocks but mostly feel for any vibrations through the wheel. Also see if it spins freely or if its tight and grindy.

Spinning it isnt a bad idea either to hear for any humming noises to try and locate where its coming from.

Hope this helps and hope you get it sorted.

Thanks mate, I'll give that a go on Wednesday when I'm off. I see you're from the North East? I'm not far from Middlesbrough? May need to call on you for a hand! lol. Thanks again.
