Went to look at a car...mileage issues

Featured Replies

Ive just travelled 1.5 hours each way to look at a 52 plate Superb. FSH and only 60k. Got there and it looked ok. It was cheap so expected a few issues. Passenger side paintwork was wrecked...looked like someone had tried to repaint the whole side. Badly.

The interior was ok...usual vent slides broken but ok. Steering wheel was worn though. Drove it and it was ok, had a poke about and found a "Farmers Skoda" sticker under the boot carpet next to the spare with some numbers which was strange.

Looked at service history and all looked ok. No mention of Cambelt though. Last serviced at 57k or something by a garage in Leicester that had been doing the yearly service for quite some time. It was a Welding Company.

A look at the MOT showed it was done in February this year with a Mileage reading of just over 66k.

Milometer shows 60k.

Walked away. The bodywork was enough to put most people off but I figured it was fixable. The dodgy mileage made me more suspcious. Everything pointed at the car having done more than 60k...

Annoyed.

Unfortunately it is very easy to just change the milage on the clocks with a cable and laptop.

Always best to just walk away. Plenty other cars out there.

Any idea how much it was, if it was really cheap (like 800 quid) then it might be a good runabout.

Yeah was 2k. Bearing in mind the next closest price wise is 3k. Was a 1.8t Comfort. Was definately something not quite right about it.

worn steering wheel always a sign of mega miles

That's good too! Shame it's not the VR6 engine (thinking about cambelt here!)

I went to see a passat 1.8t before getting my Octy, guy said everything was 100%, got there got the keys opened the bonnet took the oil filler cap off and drove home lol

It looked like someone emptied 2 jars of mayo in it lol, guy tried to say it was due to a new turbo lol

Might of been but not clearing out the pipes shows the level of workmanship lol

Sent from my Galaxy S2 not a Crapple!

2.8 cambelt is a piece of cake.

I've just spotted this...http://www.autotrade...s/2.8?logcode=p

And its a manual...mmm

Don't really get the Passat W8...dosen't appear overly fast.

No it's got an old style torque converter auto box. It also has 4WD which comes with some losses to the wheels.

Nice engine though. 275 hp 272 lb-ft. With a remap easily 300hp and 305 lb-ft.

I'm sure you could also remove the 155mph speed limit at the same time as the remap probably good for about 170mph... Autobahn anyone?

Phil

The manual W8s are a damn sight faster, but it's not a sports saloon. This was a critical mistake that pretty much every motoring journalist made when it came out... it was intended as a junior Phaeton type thing.

Would absolutely love one.

FWIW the stickers on the boot floor are AFAIK update or recall stickers. I have one with '70E8' on it - which is an electric seats software update apparently.

Yeah we are required to fit one as part of the recall

A bit off topic but any idea if there's a list of these online? I had a quick look and couldn't find one.
