front mount intercooler

Featured Replies

Hi i know this subject has been covered a few times, but what i want to know is,what is the biggest size, single pass intercooler you can get away with on the standard ko3s?I have been looking about on ebay, couple of kits available, one i fancy has a 420x160x65mm core, but im thinking this is quite small and was thinking of replacing it with a larger intercooler, kit i have been looking at comes with all pipes including pipe for map sensor from a seller tuningpartsbay, asked him about supplying the kit with a larger intercooler and he refused, asked him if he would supply the pipes etc on there own and he refused.any comments welcome.

I fabricated my own pipework and did bam inlet manifold conversion to keep track as short as possible to help reduce lag

But could you use that intercooler with say the eBay kit pipe work and sell the cooler from the eBay kit?

That's what I'm planning on doing, I think as long as you get the same width you'd be ok

Would it fit behind the crash bar ok though?

Depends what the height is,

im looking to add an intercooler on to mine aswell but just wandered if you had to leave the front bumper off? as i was it to look as standard as possiable till i put my foot down an leave the stupid golf that keeps wanting to race me every morning on the way to work on the bypass also looking at getting it remapped/front intercooler/full exhaust(turbo-back)/ air filter i have the VRS 170cr 2008-09 model

I had to do quiet alot of cutting to crash bar at the back to get it to fit as its curved inside and coolers square, also cut number plate surround out to make full use of cooler as a few members have already done,

Also had to cut inside of bumper to get pipework to fit right aswell

Think im going to order ebay kit,see how it fits,if i feel the need i will get a bigger intercooler,i know it,s going to be a task to fit.

This is mine http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/UNIVERSAL-FRONT-INTERCOOLER-510-x-300-x-76-clearance-/370530562010?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item564557afda

Altho be worned it is a very tight fit and prob better off with a slighly smaller one,

I had car off road for 3 months over winter so did it then and took my time, but i also had front panel off and sand blasted and primed and painted, I also modified my crash bar and then got a friend to weld some strengthing bars back onto it

ok thanks for the help mate ill have a look for a smaller one but ive i cant find one then ill have to see what i can do with the one you have asi dont really have 4 months to do it lol

i fitted a Twin pass intercooler. Less pipework = less lag. all custom, just gotta fiddle. lol

Plus no need to swop inlet manifolds over

yeh that too.. i did think about the whole BAM inlet. do like a bam bam

lol my single pass was already fitted by the last owner so I missed out on all the fun bits! Though I am thinking its gonna make it easier to fit a larger one lol

Single pass with correct pipe route will shorten pipework and stop editional heat off turbo ;-)

The standard pipe work from turbo is not ideál imo

But that for around 300 notes you can get a decent core and custom hard pipes made ;-)

Unless you like brand names ;-)

Are there any good single pass kits out there besides the eBay lot?

No not yet ;-)

Dunno mine is a toyo sports one.

True.. tho you have the engine bay heat to help cain you cold air being passed through your bay pipework. Must be a reason big brands like Forge THS etc and even a OEM seat sport FMIC are twin pass??

Not many other routes to take with a single pass surely?

No, the reason they did twin pass was for ease of fitting to oem pipework ;-)

No heat transfer to pipe work is minimal on single pass pipe work. The oem down back of engine pipework gets silly hot remember its right above tubby and attached to block ;-)

It also decreases the chances of Boost leaks

Flow effeciency is also alot less on a twin pass

we could be here a while.. very good debate to have in a pub tho. so many factors, so many pros and cons for both. ;)
