DVD-R Dual Layer Discs.

Featured Replies

Hi L&G's.

I need you help, do any of you know where I can get DVD-R Dual Layer discs in quantities of either 25 or 50, preferably on spindles.

If you know somewhere that sells them can you let me know.

Many Thanks.

I used to use these guys several years ago, although thanks to mostly stopping burning physical media I probably haven't bought any in about 5 years - http://www.svp.co.uk/

Alternatively, if you have access to Makro/Costco or similar, they'll usually have them in at only slightly more money, and you can walk out with them there and then.

Keep a look-out for a computer fair and pop along, there are usually 2-3 stalls selling spindles of CDs, DVDs and accessories; most have websites, so once you get their details, you can order directly from them.

I havent bought any in years because I bought a HUGE pile, then bought a car stereo with an SD card slot, so stopped burning all my music to disc; but at the time, they were selling spindles of 100 discs for about the same price as TEN discs on the high street.

I should think that www.7dayshop.com would do that sort of thing at good prices.

I use them for lots of consumables, but haven't looked specifically for DVD-R.

What are you using them for? They differ a lot in quality.

Verbatim are the best.

svp.co.uk, as mentioned above used to get all my trade when I burnt a lot of DVDs.

I'm trying to back up a couple of films which we have and they are dual layer discs, I've tried to use DVD+R DL discs but the caravan's DVD player doesn't recognize them, not because they are region or © protected I've removed that using DVDFab software, also tried WinXcopy it makes no difference, the discs are still not recognized by the player, yet the house player will play the back up copies!

So I'm putting it down to the type of disc that I'm recording the films to.

I've tried svp and loads of others but no joy when it comes to getting a spindle pack of these discs.

ukdvdr.co.uk are pretty good IME.

Already tried them, they have loads of ordinary DVD-R's but none of the DL ones.

Strange, as the "layout" of DVD+ is closer to the commercial DVD format than DVD- is, so generally your chances are higher of playing backed up DVD+ discs than DVD-.

If it reads normal discs, and you're particularly desperate, you could rip using something like DVDShrink, remove extra subtitles and languages, then use something like ConvertXtoDVD to recompress and burn to a single layer DVD. The quality may suffer slightly, but if it's just for something to watch in your caravan (rather than on a 42" TV at home) then it should still be totally acceptable.

Dont "Finalise" dual layer discs; it turns them into shiny coasters in my experience.

You could also stick to single layer DVD-R's and use CloneDVD instead. Downsizes the bitrate (quality) of a dual layer onto a single. There is a reduction in the picture quality but not enough to make any great difference. I've used it lots of times and it's a great bit of software.

dvdshrink was my favourite. Not sure if it is still available for download. If not, I have a copy here I can make available (it was shareware)

Thanks for your input. I've given up trying to source them and I'll just use my laptop & HDMI cable to play the DVD+R DL discs,
