water leak from under engine bay

Featured Replies

hi all,

ive been away for a week with work and my car has stayed on the drive and not moved.

as the title says ive noticed a water leak where ever i park, ive had my car on my small ramps and had a look under the car and i cant see it leaking from anywhere but the thing is its leaking from the back of the bay on the drivers and passengers side

what could it be? im thinking/hoping thats its rain water thats just found somehere to sit in the engine bay.

ive checked my levels and all seem fine so im hoping you'll tell me its just water thats been sat there,

if not ill have to take it garage and see what they say.

The drains for the chassis come down that way, if you have the plastic floor covers they also hold water. Plus if you have AC the drain also exits from there.

there just seems to be alot over time, its like 1 drip every 20 seconds but when i put the car on the ramps alot run off which to me said its sitting somewhere

If the scuttle drains are blocked, you can end up with several litres of water in there. Sounds unbelievable until you see it and eventually it gets to the level where it runs into the car. Leaves are the usual culprit and will allow a drip through, which itself can collect behind the plastic inner wing - again worth a good clean out on a regular basis. The older rubber drains which are "one way" are awful and I just left mine off - the bigger the exit hole the better.

just been out again and theres a wet patch running down the bank for a meter to a meter and a half from under my car but it only on passenger side,

drivers side has a little puddle, my girlfriend just mentioned that i put petrol in today so asked if it could be that, stupidly i tasted it and it didnt taste of anything so guessin its not petrol as that would possibly taste of something so unsure now anyone had a chassis drain that much?

2 questions

what are scuttle drains?

where are they located?

Scuttle drain is the bit under the wipers. Basically at the back of the engine bay. I couldn't find the rubber grommets people mention, but I just removed the wipers and scuttle cover, and used a vacuum to remove as much debris as possible.

I wouldn't attempt to taste anything that has come from an unknown source. Smell is as far as I'd recommend.

Coolant would taste, petrol would have you gag. It's just rain water I bet

Tasting is a last resort as said. I did this once after an inexplicable puddle from just behind front bumper.......... Turned out it was cat pish

Pmsl! That could go badly wrong all the same! :S

Passenger side, front side of tyre COULD be leak from wash bottle.

Or the rear of the left hand front tyre if the bulkhead connector is leaking.
