Oil changing

Featured Replies

If i was to change the oil and oil filter would this affect my warranty ? I do 160 miles a week and when i checked my oil last night it looked like tar but at a good level. I have a service coming in roughly 4,000 miles but i think its only a 20,000 mile service and i hae no idea what they will do for that service.

Thanks

It won't effect your warranty if you use the correct parts and oil.

However oil colour doesn't reflect the oils condition, personally I'd leave it to the next service. All of our modern oils are well capable of going the 10k in between services.

That 20,000 mile inspection service will be about £177 or £173 if you tell them do not put in Screen wash.

(You will maybe get told this will invalidate your Washer Motor Warranty, tell them you live in Dufftown and your name is Billy, not Silly)

I had the Skoda Dealer do the Oil Change Service, & the Inspection Service for the Warranty.

Then promptly Dropped that total cr4p oil they use, to use in some other car.

I did not trust to supply them with the Oil to put in, it might have gone in the Boot of some Technicians car.

(3.6 litres i was charged for , & can not get the level correct.)

&

i put in good oil that runs at a few degrees lower than the Dealership rubbish..

Why is your oil so bad.

What is the mileage on your car & the story Jackanory. Does it involve Skoda Specialist cars Aberdeen, John Clark Group.

?? Are you running the correct Oil Level, checked when at running Temperature??

george

Yes I must admit I love stealing oil to put in my car and put any old crap in when I'm servicing.

That way when something goes wrong with the engine and the oil is tested I then get the sack, well worth my job that four litres of oil.

Is that bad ? I have had to top up 1L since i got her and have done over 5000 miles. If i remember rightly its something like 14,500 miles, and no i got her form Inverness the new building whatever its called.

re Oil, you supply to garages yourself,

it does happen,

not saying it happens were you are, not saying you would do that..

Not saying just 'any old oil put in'.

Just maybe not the Castrol Edge or Mobile 1 supplied, just the 'new Quantum' or whatever gets put in.

Yes i have the evidence, been there, seen it, not done it. Dealt with it.

B3aver.

Sorry confused.

Was it a used or ex Demo car you bought.

Was there an Oil Change done before you collected the car, or a stamp in the book.

Did it get a 10,000 oil change done, or was one done before you bought it.

What is the Maxidot saying about the next service.

Now or in 4,000 miles due to getting a 20,000 'Inspection sevice & Oil change' or due for one

That 20,000 includes a new Pollen Filter and a good & decent service & check, or should do..

Important really with the vRS to keep the Warranty schedule just incase, to be sure, to be sure..

I would change your oil now if you think it needs it.

** Not going by colour, but be condition or advice from someone that can tell if all is well.

If you are running enough oil and all is good, and it was changed around 10,000 milres, it should not need changed now.**

What does your Oil Temp show after 10 miles or so of driving and what does it sit at once doing 60 -70 mph?

?? What is the Litre of oil you have used to top up.

What Make & Grade.??

5w/30 ?

george

In most engines oil quickly loses its pristine clean colour and acquires a dark tinge. That doesn't mean it's not OK.Take a drop off the dipstick and look at it on your fingers and you should still see that it's still basically golden coloured.

Oil that has not been changed for years and is badly contaminated will have a totally black appearance on your fingers.

According to the book it was delivered to Yorkshire, then it had a service/oil change at 9,042 miles (at Inverness) and the next inspection service is 19042 so is that 20,000 miles or 10,000 miles ? I topped up with car plan or summat prolife 5w-30 (i asked at local Autosave about which oil)

Should all be good.

5w/30 full synthetic.

Are you checking when the oil is hot, then stopped & oil at the top of the hatch area after a 'few' minutes?

Are you showing 90-92 degrees oil temp when driving steady?

Cracking day.

Coming around for a run that way tonight or tomorrow.

Lots of Royal Security & unmarked's kicking about as they are out and about. lol not.

george

EDIT, Just checked Autosaves site.

Was it maybe, 'Ecolife' 5w/30 fully synthetic?

Should be OK.

(They do tend to think when you say Fabia vRS, that it is a diesel.

Always give the reg, or make sure they know it is a Petrol tsi twin charger)

Yup showing 90-93 when i was (or should i say the Porsche) playing with. I normally check when it is warm, once i get back from a run and left to settle for a few minutes. At the moment oil is sitting middle of the hatch section.

Ahhh so thats why there is barriers up all over and few more unmarked cars than usual then :p

I just recently had the 10,000 mile oil change, and as it was free I always worry that they will put cheap rubbish stuff in. They tried charging me £90 for the service, despite telling them quite a few times that I do have 2years free servicing. Before the oil change, the oil temp would often sit at 92-95 degrees on the weekly trip up to Essex I do, so will see what it is next time I go.

All sounds good.

Take care. The Prince's & extras do not move over if you meet them coming towards you, when they are giving it welly.

I was showing about 105 degrees

& going for it as i climbed after leaving Grantown, & then it dawned that i had better let the Audi's pass,

they did not half pass..

Yeah i gave them the reg, also just checked its Comma Prolife 5w/30 for audi ect with fixed service intervals.

George, in 31 years of car teching I never ever saw anyone steal customers own oil, and I would never do that myself either! I know it's fashionable to bash techs and dealers...but come on! As Tech1e says, it just isn't worth it for one thing and the second thing is that techs can get any oil they want at a fraction of the price you pay. Not saying it's maybe NEVER happened but don't let that make you so paranoid!

The general idea around scroats is not to let the perceived to be straight people or the bosses see or know..

Or as said, 'not worth your job'.

Lots of people do lose jobs tho, for various reasons. like Stock Takes etc.

Only paranoia if its something imagined.

Must just be a Scottish thing then that can happen,

and not only among Apprentices.

I obviously hang around a different class of garage or workshop where pilfering of what can be a days wages worth of value or a favour to a mate does happen.

When you served your time did the Slick 50 always reach the customers engine, or was it the Journeymans perk?

?? Have you ever worked in a Flick foot Fitting Dancer place?

george

Well mine shouldn't need an oil change... Got a constant flow of fresh oil going through ;)

160 miles a week? Thats nothing, I do 700!

Changing your own parts will affect warranty, because the work needs to be carried out by a VAT registered garage with genuine parts.

Oh and the Seat dealers stole my £90 coat after I left it in the courtesy car

Not quite. Any scheduled service work needs to be carried out by a VAT registered garage, use EU approved parts etc. but if you change your oil mid service how is anyone to know?
