Lets us have a Major hot topic, BMW vs Skoda

Featured Replies

In her line of work driving a skoda means lots of urine taking (she is a teacher), as she drove a favorit for a year and the kids are merciless :) .

I'm 18 and my car a fabia, the power that is 1.2  , it is the best car in the school student parking lot, said by the drivers, not me! I've let mates drive it and they are all impressed. They've got a lot of respect for it. However, it gets on my t*ts when some ignorant kid has something bad to say..i ask them why and they say 'cos its a skoda'. They arn't even woth it.

Contrary to my earlier remarks on BMWs themselves I think there are several types of laughable BMW drivers. One type that always manages to crack me up is the unmarked 316i driver. Why on earth do these people think they have a fast car? Why do they want to embarrass themselves by wanting to race other people? Why do they think that their single exhaust pipe doesn't give them away?

 - I don't tend to get this problem very often as my driving style avoids this kinda thing (usually).

Don't leave a big enough gap for idiots to push into or alternatively leave a big gap. Inbetween seems to attract bad drivers who feel they can pull out and stay at their old speed whilst you stand on your brakes to avoid slamming into the back of them...

Every once in a while I have a bit of fun in the Furby. M3s are ace imho, and I would not mind having a go in one. Same for the Octy vRS, no doubt that's great too.

There have been a few peeps who had to be taught a lesson badge-wise, but generally speaking people seem to have caught up on the 'newer Skodas are actually pretty decent' way of thinking. Let's not kid ourselves though, it's still a Skoda, and it can be the fastest skip around :D (this is why I don't flip the car over, only invites comments  )

Wouldn't have a beemer if you paid me! same as a merc! Overpriced Cr*p! Even with M or AMG badges!

Sorry but I just got to disagree!! BMW are very nice cars and I certainly would have one if someone paid me!!!

The camera never lies!!! I will certainly be sad when she goes!!!

Funny how you brought this up...the owner of the BMW agency here is the owner of the Skoda agency here too

Have to disagree there.............M3's are overpriced and the engines have that crappy variocam problem, plus they are only quick in a straight line, and you just look like a bell end when you're driving it!

BTW Do the indicators work on yours?????

Think these say it all :)

I think they are aimed at completely different markets for one...

But having said that I'm a massive fan of Audi and the quattro system..

Which brings me onto the rear wheel drive.. pure driving machine...

A guy at work has a 330ci clubsport.. It is okish looking but take the wheels, and badge off and you could be driving a 316i... Nothing special.. Also the

car does not feel that quick...

The M3 is a different beast but it doesn't look that exciting...

Also the skills needed to drive powerfull rear wheel drive car aren't alway apparent... Hence why you need traction control, ESP etc etc....

I've seen a few BMW and Ford Sierra Cosworths backed into hedges after

OHHH oversteer moments...

I still say a well driven Audi quattro , ( S4 ) would leave a well driven M3 on most UK roads in the dry ( don't mention the wet... )..

I sold my octavia vrs to get a brand new bmw 320d sport and the only reason I didn't buy another vrs was I got a better deal on the bmw. This was last October and having had time to compare both cars I would comment as follows.

Interiors I liked the Vrs but the drivers seat gave me terrible back ache. The bmw seat is a lot better and I can do 400 miles plus in a day and not get any tringes

Exterior I'm sorry but it's got to be the vrs to many noobs drive bmw's but I was getting increased challanges from chavs wanting a race in the vrs.

Engines This is very tough as believe it or not the bmw diesel only averages slightly more mpg than the vrs so once again the vrs wins.

Drive train Sorry chaps give me a rwd with six speed box any day of the week

Practicality Got to be the vrs with a boot you could live in.

Suspension The bmw suspension is far better than the vrs as it copes with bad roads a lot better but is still tight around corners.

To sum it up I would a Octavia vrs with the bmw seats, the 1.8 20v engine mated to the rwd 6 speed gear box running on the bmw suspension - Now that would be a nice car

PS you can fettle ;) the 320d to get 180bhp out of it

I love my Skoda, in a straight line it moves very well, but its front wheel drive, and piling almost 200bhp through the front wheels and expecting them to steer at the same time is just too much, so the ASR and all the other technology cuts the power and the fun.

Or, switch off the electronic aids and learn how unpleasant understeer can be. So thats not fun either.

Whilst Skodas are fast in a straight line, and astonishing good value, and very well made, they just aren't as much fun as a decent BMW on a good, twisty road.

Choose a BMW and a Skoda with the same power, and the BMW will be loads more fun to drive.

Choose a BMW and a Skoda for the same price, and the Skoda will be the better car (straight line performance, equipment, toys)

Then think about image, and the picture gets all distorted, but we all drive Skodas, so we have very mature views about image.

the only thing i would like to point out, are we all comparing standard octys, fabias against standard bmws?

its slightly unfair to compare a modified car to a standard.

have to agree the old octy was a bargin.

New Octy isnt the same bargin :sofahide: good car but just not the bargin it once was. for the 2.0TDi i looked at was coming up at somehwere between

Well...

Funny enough you bring this topic up, my dad beats Skoda cars to the ground...badge snobbery really...though he's driven my car and likes it, he says he wouldn't own one...he got himself a 645i and my mother has an x5 4.4....so racing him with that coupe, i have no chance at all in a straight...on a curve probably...I can kick a 320 easy...the new 330 is very fast, I've driven it.

Then again, you have to understand that BMW is a name. Skoda is a name too, but it is not a 'prestigious' one. Performance wise andy car could beat a BMW if it's made to...but when you're talking interior quality and advanced computer technology, you can't really compare a BMW to a Skoda.

True on the pricing front, skoda are becoming expensive especially with the new passat apparently to be sold for less than the outgoing passat model :rubchin: but they are good cars in their own right and the cheapest 3 series BM starts at
