Lets us have a Major hot topic, BMW vs Skoda

Featured Replies

My Ex-Boss drives a 02 plate BMW 320D and I drive a new Octy II 2.0 TDi Elegance Estate. He and other BMW drivers at work slate Skoda yet acknowledge it is a good car sometimes!! I truely believe my car is a better machine, and I have driven both, and its quicker too, and better interior.. yet my car around 16 grand and his cost him 25 grand... he just wont except the fact!

Why does it mainly seem to be some BMW drivers slate Skoda, yet you should not directly compare them, unless by their badge snobbery. I, personally, do not rate ANY BMW unless its a 328, 330 or M3, which are all great cars, but these are very expensive executive cars and range from 25-40 grand. I didn't buy a second hand BMW out of principle as most are driven by....... well lets not gets into that.

Skoda hold their prices well second hand and they are a better value, and better cars than many Fords & Vauxhalls.

Any comments on this?

I agree with you. A new skoda is an absolute steal at the price...

However, it does sound like you are trying to persuade yourself still!

Any comments on this?[/quote']My stepdad owns a 330C and it is obviously a better car but in a straight line it is only slightly quicker than my octy. But saying that he agrees that value for money you can't beat skoda.

Not driven / looked at the new Octy, but the you have missed a few things. For a start, i love the old E30 BMW's, having owned 2 of the best, but the new generation drivers are compleate bankers with a 'W'. However the E46 / E90 has the best engine / driven wheels configuration, the best weight distrabution, and a fantastic chasis. The handling and grip levels are breathtaking and all round stability is not to be frowned upon. As for the performance, i think the 320d is good, and probobably isn't a lot different to the Octy, but you buy a 2.0d for econamy only.

As for the price being

Amongst our friends there are two fellas who are serious car snobs (they like being top dogs in everything, but especially cars). Still being relatively young, they can't afford your M3s or AMGs, but one has a 318 and the other a 2.0 X-Type. I keep out of the conversation safe in the knowledge that my little car has just as many toys, is almost as spacious (in the cabin anyway), depreciates better, and could 5h1t on either of them if we ever had a race :D

It's like the road test they did of the new 320d on 5th Gear the other week, I just sat there watching the review, going 'my car does that', 'and that', 'that too', but of course the big difference was the Beemer cost 27K and mine cost just over 12...

Would love a BMW but won't buy one because of the brands image :)

Funny story from the weekend.Chap whose BBQ we went to upgrades his BMW quite often. His neighbour thinks it is a competition and matches whatever my friend puts on the drive. My friend has just taken delivery of his 530i in black (WOW, I said Mr Bungle was an eejut. He is with the 1 series but not this one)

Bloke next door has had his maserati delivered now.Expensive and pointless competition methinks but it shows how people think! (unless the sod has won the lottery  )

I always beat my stepdads car purely on the basis that my car actually moves under it's own steam everyday and doesn't need constant towing to the dealers by the AA

Unfortunately, some BMW owners do think they are a cut above anyone else!! and this gives a bad name to BMW owners generally!!

I wouldn't let them bother you!!

You can always tell them about me as I own an '03 BMW M3 which I have had since new and am trading in for a Fabia vRS!!

Reason - M3 = fantastic car but at a price, vRS = fantastic car for the price

Not comparable really!

I let everyone else drive what they like whether I like it or not. Do I give a monkeys what they are driving? Do I heck.

Does it bother me if they dont like what I am driving....nope.

Lifes too short to get hung up about who has what car, or what badge it has.

Its mine, thats the end of it.

I thought it may cause a few replies this subject.

I like BMW's just prefer Audi's if I had the cash... I had the choice of an old A4 with 50,000 miles or a brand new Octy II.... no choice really after trying both, the Octy II won due to price and the spec, and it was new :)

My Dad's still funny about me driving a Skoda - always coming out withe the old Skoda jokes. What does he drive? A Vauxhall Astra CDX, complete with plastic "wood" trim.

I'd love to say I had a Lotus though, even when people tell me it stands for 'Loads Of Trouble,Usually Serious' ;) .Would happily be badge obsessed then.

Slightly off topic the above but immediately people forget about cars and think about images they portray. Can't deny they are great cars.Don't think their interiors match Audi's and I dont think they are streets ahead of the new octy interior either.

BMW's are great cars tarnished by a few plonkers.Still think the 1 looks like a shoe though :thumbdwn:

It's really very interesting how people perceive the brands and the engines in them.

I drive a VW Passat, with the 130 TDI PD lump that all our Fabia vRS owners love and adore.

My father drives an 54 plate BMW 320d, six speeds 150bhp, etc etc.

He's always bleating how his car has power, will shift etc etc.

I say the TDI PD feels a lot faster away from lights and in-gear and would probably leave him for dead.

I drove a Renault Scenic on Friday with a work colleague, and the salesman and I got talking about cars and speed.......

He asked what drove, so I told him. I also told him about the Beemer in the household. His response?

"Well, you'll wipe the floor with him with that TDI...."

I think we'll let that one rest now, with the considered opinion from an Industry Professional. :D

I beat a BMW M3 on last years cannonball in a straight drag along a Continental Motorway, that will do for me !!

I've not had the pleasure of an M3 yet but a 330ci recently was easy pickings.

Says it all, really. If I could afford it I'd have a powerful BMW anytime - the balance, the weight distribution, the fun of RWD, the straight-six sound, all would easily overcome the fact that I would be seen as an arrogant tw4t. A Skoda - any Skoda - wouldn't be able to come near a BMW on those counts. (I'm not talking straight-line speed or lap times here, but simply the pleasure of driving.)

A 320d would have just enough power to still enjoy the pleasure of RWD and 50:50 weight distribution but if you slip to 316i or 118d level - about the price level I can afford - I'd have a Skoda any day.

BMW might make excellent cars but regardless of the cost I wouldn't drive one - they're so bloody aspirational. People who are truly successful and happy in life don't feel they need to ram it in everyone else's face ! ;)

Drive the new BMW M3 CSL and say that..I drove one last week and it took three days to get the smile off my face....AWESOME.

Yes, I agree the Octy vRS is fantastic value, but the residuals are not good as has been recently proven by several people on this forum trying to sell Octy vRS's in top condition on this forum and in the motoring press, and not even getting a reply at give away money.

As much as we all rave about the marque, and the great value for the money it is, it will take years for the tarnished name of Skoda to be accepted by the majority, and, until that happens we will always be the "Ethnic Minority" of the motoring world, and subject to all the jokes we have heard.

No. I do not have a down on the car or hang up about the make, and rave about my own Octy vRS, which I have owned from new and is four years old in August, which is a record for me, as they normally all my cars get sold at two years old.

I claimed my first scalp in my Furby today..............Beemer 320d!

Thought he could have me, but stayed glued to his **** and waved at him as I overtook! Tee Hee!

5hat on by a car 15grand cheaper, His face was a picture :)

Will let you know how they compare soon. My brother is due to get a BMW320 as company car in next few months, whereas I opted for a Skoda Octavia Elegance 2.0 FSI 150bhp . No doubt we will get together and compare notes on performance and the like. I am sure that he will not be in favour of my choice purely on the badge, but I wait with baited breath

when i bought the octy rs one of my (vectra driving) uncles said 'yeah, its nice but its no bmw is it?' my reply? 'thats exactly why i bought it!!'

i'd have a beemer if its got an m badge on it the rest can booger off

Was looking at the fabia vrs and octy vrs, but wife did not want to know. In her line of work driving a skoda means lots of urine taking (she is a teacher), as she drove a favorit for a year and the kids are merciless :) . I like the new fabia, great little car, had one as a rental and was really impressed.

But as I am a tight git :D , so would not pay for Golf or Audi prices.. rip off. So settled on a compromise. Seat Cupra. Bummer is I might be getting a new company car ,so after I just got the cupra fixed up with the fun "extras" she might get my car. How much does that suck !

Wouldn't have a beemer if you paid me! same as a merc! Overpriced Cr*p! Even with M or AMG badges!

My fabia is a good car at a good price. The 3 series Bmw is better, probably as good as it gets, but at a premium price. They are not crap. I like my pd130 engine because it is powerfull, however it is also crude and now being overtaken by other powerplants. BMW 2.0d is one but even the new astra 1.9 I drove recently showed how things have moved on. Silky smooth and without the abrupt on/off power band of the pd130.

I feel truely proud of my fabia tonight BMW 0 Skoda 1 :D

I was at the light and this tw*t in a BMW softtop pulled up in the LEFThand ONLY lane. Look at me and then the car and just started s******ing.  I think I'll wipe that smile off you face.........Lights changed and I left him dead.............which must have dented his ego becuase he then sat on my bumper for most of the journey. Didn't learn his lesson once, as ever so oftened I'd put my foot down and leave him for dead. His light was flashing at me alot though  maybe he thought he was on the fastlane of the motorway?
