Fascia question?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I have just bought an 53 plate Octavia 1.9TDI.

I would like to transfer my JVC CD/radio and my Omnifi mp3 player to the car.

The JVC is a standard size radio, I have a specially created plate to mount the head unit for the mp3 player. the actual unit will go into the glovebox.

I am unsure of the fascia layouts on ebay. Most seem to specify 2004 onwards.?

Also my car has a fake wood surround around the radio, buttons above it and around the climate control unit and ashtray, which I would like to keep if at all possible.

The fascia units I have seen seem to suggest I will need replace the top laying surround.

Is it at all possible to use the plate that has the screw holes in it only and then my original wood surround.?

Is there really a great a great difference between pre and post 2004 models.?

I have been informed on a previous post that the power wires are reversed to standard in the original unit. I assume the included harness adapter allows for this.?

TIA

Both the stereo and the cubby hole below it are single din sized, why not use an old stereo cage and fit your plate to that and remove the cubby hole? If you use the mp3 player more than the stereo you can also move the stereo down and put the mp3 player in it's place?

2004 and onwards means octy mk2.

I swapped by standard HU for a Blaupunkt one without needing any fascia adaptor.

IIRC fake wood was not standard on the elegance (certainly not on mine), might be worth posting some pictures of what you are trying to do.

All mk1 octys have a standard double din sized hole in the dash, either has a stereo and cubby hole or a satnav unit in, or in my case a stereo and a double cup holder lol

Will do. I'll post a pic of what my setup is now and what the Octy looks like at present.

I just do not want to go and buy something that I find out later does not fit, or does not do what I need.

My radio removal keys have just arrived. I didn't have much success with the hacksaw blade option, too flexible, but the keys work fine.

Thanks for all the replies.

Here are the pics

The first is the actual mp3 unit that sits in the glovebox and will fit in the octy glovebox.

The second is as it is in my car at present. A mate made me a plate and brackets and that is screwed to the cubby hole of the cavalier.

And then the fascia of my Octy.

I seem to recall I have a brand new alpine cage somewhere in the loft which I might be able to put to good use if I cannot use the cubby hole on the Octy.

TIA

That trim is not original, it might from the L&K. You should be fine without any adapters though.

The car isn't a black hatch by any chance?

That's a twin din sized hole with stereo and cubby hole removed

No. silver hatch.

I *thought* the power supply was switched the other way for the original units?. That was mentioned in a reply in another post I made?

Yes it is, just need the live and switched live swapping round

And remember to disconnect the K line so you don't end up with 12v being fed to the diagnostics port.

Will do. Thanks for all the advice. If I get stuck, no doubt I'll be back. :D

Well I bought a harness adapter mainly to keep things tidy as I will need to wire in the omnifi, and I used a terminal block before.

I've just tried the harness and it powers my radio. The radio will come on without the ignition being on, but so it seems will the Symphony.

Unfortunately it now needs a code and I don;t have one. I read here that if it was recognised by the ecu it would just work?.

The harness has a blue line loose terminated in a bullet socket, but the yellow and orange do not seem to be swapped over.?

I've taken pictures of both ends. Connection lugs are at the top.

Radio reception seemed pretty poor, so I expect I need one of those aerial adapters as well.?

TIA

Another question. White wire has come out of the female plug. Is it possible to remove the metal pins from the plug,?, and if so how please. I am unable to get anything in to crimp it tighter.?

If the symphony stereo was originally from the car it should leave the safe mode without a code after being switched on for a while.

You'll need to swap the red and yellow wires if you lose the set radio stations and settings I didn't have to when I fitted mine, for the radio reception you will need a power injector.

The terminals will come out of the plug, you can get proper terminal removal kits or just find something small enough to push in the hole above the terminal to push the securing lug down.

I believe it is the original, so I'll give that a try on Saturday, taxed and insured from then. :D

I have jeweller's screwdrivers, so that should work, and I'll get on an order a power injector.

Thanks for the reply.

Have ordered a power booster for the aerial. My cubby hole seems firmly in place. How is it meant to come out. I don't want to use brute force in case I break something.

I think I inadvertently left the radio on after putting it back. I barely got the car started as the battery was low, alright now since I had a drive. The radio did indeed work when I was trying to start the car. I'm used to having to have the ignition on to listen to the radio, and that way do not forget to switch it off, if you turn down the volume for a minute to have a conversation. Can I swap over more wires to achieve this,?

TIA

I think you do need to use quite a bit of brute force. I think if you undo the climate control unit and pull it forward you can get a better grip on the cubby hole.

The cubby hole should just pull out, my stereo has only ever turned off after the key is removed from ignition.

With the radio out I can get my hand behind it, but it still seemed fixed in place in someway.

I'll look to see how the climate control comes out.

Thanks for that. I'll have to have a play and see when the radio loses power.

It is held in with screws. The one time I did remove the cubby hole is was a right pain to get out, as it was a very tight fit.

Thanks for that.

I can see that after I remove that fascia trim. I'll wait until all the bits tun up and then have a look. I don't have the keys for my JVC radio any more, so only want to put it in once. :D

I used the blank covers from the back of a desktop PC to get it out of my old car and have purchased Skoda removal keys for the existing radio.

Seems my radio also goes off when the key is removed, so not sure why the battery seemed low this morning.?

This is a cracking forum, a wealth of knowledge here., I've just ordered one of those BT diagnostic adapters mentioned in another thread. Not so much for the tweaks, but to read any faults I might get.
