New car with a couple of minor issues !

Featured Replies

Just bought an 03 plate Octavia VRS and have noticed a couple of issues with the car. Nothing major but would like to get them sorted. The first is the side lights. Have had none since buying it. Checked the bulbs which are LED and replaced the one side but no joy. Checked the fuses and all ok.

The second issue is the remote central locking is not working. There is no fuse in slot 6 which is the central locking I believe but I did try using a fuse from another slot which bought no joy. The red light on the key flashes when you press the buttons but nowt happens. I only have one key with the car and was wandering if anyone knew a way of getting this working again.

Lastly, the ABS warning light is on. Done a fault code scan which says the front left. Tried to clear the code and the reader just comes up with a Protocol message and does not clear. I am going to change the sensor in the morning and see if this helps but have never experienced the fault code reader not clearing the codes. Am I missing something ??

Any help with any or all of my issues would be greatly received.

Cheers

Abs wont clear mate when there is a fault there. Replace the sensor then reset and it should clear.

Locking is normally the module in the drivers door. Search my threads for help on this. Might be the plug as they get wet and rot the fine pins.

Side lights not a clue.

Do the rears come on when you put sides on?

If not then id say get another switch if rears come on but fronts dont then check the wires.

Why would you buy the car with these faults? Hope it was dirt cheap?

On n when you lock car with key does the red light in drivers door flash? If it flashes fast or not at all here is a fault. Should show on vcds

Cheers Mate. Going to change the ABS sensor this morning so hopefully that will solve that one. As for the door locking. When I lock it with the key the red light flashes in the door at normal speed. I have a feeling a recode of key through Vag Com will be required to sort this as the car has no fault codes aside from the ABS fault. Side lights work at rear but not front and all wiring looks to be fine and untouched.

I bought the car with these faults as they are all minor issues really. I have been using the car daily for 2 weeks and it runs a dream. The work required when I bought it has been done (or parts on way) for £100 which aint bad as there is something wrong with any car you buy. The sidelights and central locking issues are non urgent but will get done. As for the price being dirt cheap then it was !!!!! I sold my Mark 3 Anni and bought this and still had change. I could probably break this and get most of my money back which is why these faults all never put me off the car. All faults were spotted when viewing so no nasty surprises and the main thing for me was the bodywork condition and spot on running engine and drive train. Dont mind doing things like discs and pads and ABS sensors myself.

ABS sensor changed and the dash lights are gone. No one had any experiences of the other two faults ??

check the headlight switch - does the circuit for controlling the sidelights work? try shorting the loom out (Mr Haynes should be able to tell you which wires)

central locking faults may cost a fortune to fix - i know from experience (especially if the fuse has been removed to stop the car unlocking itself on its own)

have you tried just recoding the key, there are steps to this in the owners manual as i did mine and was ok, i can't recall the steps but quite easy.

Also suggest to replace both sides light together and see if you get any joy, I had 2 LED lights go out and think that if you have both out just replacing one may effect it, could be totally wrong and talking rubbish.....

Yes have tried the manuals guide to recoding but think you need two keys to do it properly and I only have one. As for the side lights I will change the other one in the morning and if no joy will check out the switch. Thanks for the replys.

Tried changing both bulbs and still no joy. Then tried standard bulbs which came on straight away. Then noticed the fittings in the bulb holders were quite narrow and the wires on the LED bulbs were spaced out more. Bent the wires outwards and refitted and the LED's now work so 2 jobs done just the central locking to sort now.
