Oh Poo - New Air Conditioning Compressor Needed

Featured Replies

Since having my suspension changed at Unit18 my air conditioning has ceased working.

I called Ali on the way home to see if it was likely he'd dislodged something but it was completely coincidental. Bloody annoying none the less.

A day off today meant i had chance to take it to my local air conditioning specialists for a expert diagnosis.

Unfortuantely the prognosis is not good.

In fact the thing has already passed on to the great scrap yard in the sky.

The belt drives, and the pulley turns but thats about it.

The compressor does not turn with the pulley though leading to a diagnosis of sheared clutch shaft or some such other technical gubbins.

Bottom line is the need for a new compressor.

Which sucks.

A lot.

Like a lot to the tune of almost £500 (or £750 if you change the drier and flush the system too)

I think I'll get used to driving with the window open - now where was that link to cheap wind deflectors

Have you got a sunroof?

Failing that ... you could always do this.

Strip it all off, save the weight in the front end.

I would remove the lot if it was me, i have never used ac before on any of my cars. Save a bit of weight aswell.

rarely needed in england tbh but always nice to have the choice, this sucks dude.

In that case fancy stripping yours off and donating it to me :)

To be honest it's not the end of the world but a much bigger bill than i was expecting.

The black one still works though so we'll take that on hot days! :D

There is a plastic/rubber plate between the compressor pulley and the compressor shaft. It is designed to shear if the shaft seizes to prevent the v-belt being ripped off.

If you do decide to fix the a/c, you must get it flushed and replace the drier. The chances are that bits of the seized compressor air floating around the system and can quickly destroy a new compressor.

tried ask around at scappies?

I actually nearly removed it the other day for my intercooler fitment but the old man talked me out of it for future sale pros. If i had a bill like that i wouldnt replace though.

It's down to personal preference really. I personally wouldn't be without it and ours is on pretty much all the time (climate control) and have never really noticed that it impacts too much on the economy.

Most failures seem to happen when it is infrequently used.

MTFU and rip it out like I did lol! I have a compressor from my asz Tdi 130 in the shed btw?

How much should a re-gas cost? Mine has started to make strange noises and not give out much cooling effect.....

between £30 - £45 really

£69 for air con service with Skoda.

Mines not worked for a few years. Keep meaning to get Ali to take it all off, as much as I like AC I can cope without it, rather save the weight than get it fixed. That said iv not checked to see exactly whats up with it.

As I mentioned I binned my air con and moved my 19kg battery to the boot with a significant improvement in handling!

How much does the aircon actualy weigh? Also 19kg battery, you get it off an artic truck? Mine wieghs under 10kg easy.
