and youy can guess the rest, the screen is now bust. has anyone tried replacung one?

I have had a kindle 1 apart and it does so reasonably easily.

No screws on the casing, it just clips together with the normal plastic hooks and loops.

Once inside there are a few very small screws to undo ( jewellers screwdriver required)

It is all very neat and well laid out in there.

Even if you remove the battery, the screen will not blank as it's essentially an electronic etch-a-sketch

iirc the screen is held in place by a couple of screws and the connector is a flat ribbon cable.

I have no idea if spare parts are available though ??

For the time and trouble and cost of a new screen, it may be more cost effective binning it and buying a new one

How did you break it?

I know Amazon have replaced a few that have been damaged by moderate heat from a laptop.

Wife left it beside the bed on the floor, started getting out of bed and heard a crack as i placed my foot on it followed by several expletives.

Have looked around and replacement screens are about £50 ish, however i note that on some forums Amazon seem very generous to help in getting you a replacement so may actually be the cheaper route to a repair. I guess if your Kindle is broken they have a vested interest in getting you up and running again otherwise you wont buy any more books from them.

My other half's kindle ended up with a broken screen. Was in a proper kindle case in a bag and something must have pressed on it.

Contacted Kindle. Brand new kindle sent out and a return box/bag sent to send the old one back. All FOC.

It is a VERY common and well known issue of the screens being very delicate and prone to cracking.

Give it a go. Worth a shot.

Yup, I think they were sold at a loss to start with. Book sales are the thing. EBooks are as close to pure profit as you can get. No postage + hardly any production or storage costs.

Amazon customer service has always been good when I've had a problem. Plus the call centre is in the UK (Edinburgh).

Will give it a go when we get back from holiday. Nothing ventured nothing gained. be silly not to if it results in a FOC or discounted replacement.

Thanks all

Amazon are usually very good. REplaced mine free of charge at 9 months old with no questions asked.

Had mine replaced twice. The first time it was out of warranty and I had to pay for a reconditioned one ($120 IIRC). The replacement went Pete Tong last month and it was replaced free of charge.

I read somewhere that Amazon lost a court case concerning damage to the case caused by covers and have to replace them as it was deemed to be a design fault.
