Whiring noise after hitting a deep grid

Featured Replies

Was on my way home from work, and went round a corner to be greeted by a tractor on my side of the road, got right over and smashed my front left wheel into a grid. Went to the garage and he seams to think i may have broken my gearbox or LSD, the whiring noise gets worse when going round a right hand corner and quieter going round a left hand corner.

I have only just had this car and things dont seam to be going my way atm, just want some advice really...

thanks

Sounds more like just a bearing to me. Not the simplest fix (difficult to DIY) but won't be as bad as a replacement/recon gearbox or LSD.

Sounds more like bearing or CV joint TBH.

Jack the said wheel up and give it a spin and jiggle etc.

You should be able to pinpoint the noise then.

They have had it up on the ramp and cant hear any rumble or noises, a tiny bit of play in the track rod end, but the noise is not constant, its like its every other revolution, which makes me doubt the bearing theory

As stated it sounds like a bearing or cv for sure. If it was the diff or box it would change pitch with speed. Have you tried the spare wheel on the car to rule out the alloy and/or tyre?

sounds like they want business. Its some times impossible to hear a bearing unless weight is on it, especially if its damage not wear. Cant see how it would damage box unless the wishbone gave and caused an inward snatch movement.

I would be arranging track rod end/drive shaft/bearing anyway, its not big money

As already said, get the spare wheel on it and take it for a drive. You want to rule out any damage on the wheel before you start replacing components.

I've had a couple of tyres destroyed by hitting deep potholes. They often look ok, but on very close inspection they are mis-shapen, and cause all kinds of strange symptoms.

when i hit the grid it took a nice little chunk out of my alloy, so i swapped it for a back one. So i have cancelled that out...

Buckled wheel, tracking will be out, wheel bearing gone but deffo not the gearbox. The guy is chatting to get your wonga, ;)

I like you, my wallet likes you more

I buckled my wheel from really bad pot hole, and now makes a whiring noise/wheel bearing noise rumble type thing, and I had 1 eh shape tyre and tracking out.

All they said was that there was no play or noise coming from the wheel, but as lofty79 if its damage, the sound may only be there when its under load, i need to get it done asap

That's my guess anyway. And the first place I would look. Without hearing it I cant make any guarantees.

No one is holding you to it mate, if it isn't the bearing it's not the bearing, simple.

Keep us posted dude

All fixed! Replaced the bearing and hub, the guy pulled the bearing apart and couldn't see anything and it still had no play before being replaced
