Is my handbrake cable stretching?

Featured Replies

I recently fitted some "1k0" springs to the rear brake calipers on my vRS to stop any binding issues. However since fitting the springs I have to keep adjusting the handbrake cable to take out the slack. I'm worried that the weight of the springs are causing the cable to stretch. Anyone else had similar issues?

Cheers :-)

I'm assuming that you have fitted the spring the right way, ie so that it returns the handbrake levers to their end stops. Also, these cables are very strong so, in my experience you will not be stretching the cable. So, what can be happening - I slackened off the cable when fitting the springs, also I re-zero'd the pistons to make everything "just right" - then a bit later I re-adjusted the cable so that the levers were just resting on their end stops. Sorry I can't work out why this can be happening, it just does not make any sense - as I hope it does with you.

my handbrake cable has stretched and had to be adjusted twice in the last 6 months.. my wifes sdi one has needed plenty of adjustment too.. maybe if they have had cheap aftermarket ones put on they are prone to stretching? both sets of cables were on both cars when i bought them but i have never had to adjust handbrake cables as often as these 2 fabias before..

I'd think that any cars that genuinely have stretching handbrake cables will have, or have had seized rear brakes - and I'd hope that will be worse with rear drum brakes. If you have properly serviced rear brakes and only use/need moderate effort to apply the handbrake, then the cable should never stretch.
