MPG, EGR Valve etc...

Featured Replies

Good Afternoon All,

Just after some advice/info.

Firstly the car in Question:

  • Skoda Fabia vRS - 06 Plate, BLT Engine Code.
  • Has been rempped by Awesome GTI. (There own remap, with the EGR Valve Fault mapped out)
  • Apart from that totally standard and on about 85K now.

Firstly what sort of mileage do people get from a full tank fo fuel? If i'm lucky it'll be 450, otherwise its 380-400. Thats a combinations of Motorway and Town Driving. Is this normal?

Had the car about 3 years now and its never been any better/worse? Always had an issues with the Emissions/EGR Valve fault light being on, so i've had that mapped out by AwesomeGTI as part of there remap.

Never had the EGR off, but i'm told removing and cleaning it can help runnin/mpg? Also read numerous bits about totally removing the EGR Valve (I was under the impression it was fine to do so, local garage has now told me I shouldn't do?). Any personal experience or guidance appreciated.

Not suffering from any other running issues as far as I can tell, and its still a good laugh once driven a bit more energetically ;)

Cheers for thoughts/comments.

How you measuring g? Fromm fill up till light coming on? Or from how many miles are left on the trip?

I can get around 470 from a full tank with the trip going down to about 5miles.

From filling up till it says last 10-15 miles in the tank and the needle is pretty much at the bottom.

So your average of 380/400 is 395/415 max. I would say that's low. Mine was always like that then it was discovered I had some dodgy wiring on the the loom. Once fixed it shot up.

But I don't do much town driving.

if you have the vac operated egr then it would be a good idea to clean it and maybe the manifold and then block off the vac I s'pect the turbo is being "throttled " and it also may be putting in exhaust when not wanted if it's the electric one there is info elswhere but I have not done one I guess you've done the expensive bit having the light fixed first

Both BLT and ASZ are vaccum operated EGR valves.

Just shy of 600 miles per tank here, when driven sensibly on my 40 odd mile commute to work and back on main roads, 60-70mph. 1/2 tank of juice left atm with the trip saying 315 miles to empty.

Why clean it, to then block it off? Or am I just being dense?

Also any guides or video's online for both cleaning and removal?

Cheers for advice by the way :)

Do you have to remove the whole EGR in order to clean it, or can you remove a few bits and simply spray this inside? Perhaps it would bugger the engine if it became sucked in?

Thanks :)

you can do it on the car but im taking it off, only a few allen screws i think. wont hurt the engine cos on the can it says for cleaning EGR, Valves, Inlets, turbos and intercoolers.

my pref' would be to remove, whilst wynns stuff is, ingeneral pretty good at 80+K you will KNOW it's clean and there have been instances of crap sticking valves after scratching and scraping, long series allen keys are easier from memory, either cut the vac control pipe in half and rejoin or cut it off AT the plastic nipple and use it shorter DON'T pull it will likely break off the capsule also if you disconnect the other plastic bits warm with a hairdrier or similar first reduces breakage best of luck
