hi all i read an artical the other day about swapping duel mass flywheels to single mass. The artical said that it can cause more stress on other parts of the engine and said that people have had problems with things like cambelts since swapping admittedly they were talking about desiel cars but i woundered if it would cause any problems on a turbo petrol. Has any one had any problems since swapping ?? I was going to go for a vr6 clutch and g60 flywheel but since reading that i am not to sure.

Ive done about 12k since doing conversion and not had any problems,

A few ppl say it causes more vibration but even with superpro'd bottom mount i think it actually reduced it and my duel mass flywheel was still servicable when removed,

Engine feels alot happier to rev now than it did and i can sit in traffic all day without my knee feeling like its going to explode

had mine fitted to my vrs 18 months now and havent had any issues what so ever. although i dont cover many miles so might be worth getting someone else's input. my opinion though is that its a worthy upgrade with a noticeable difference to the drive of the car

I would always recommend staying away from the single mass unless you do a lot of track day use. The performance is better with the single but drive-ability means I'd always recommend a dual mass.

The way to harness the power if you want the car as a daily driver would be to uprate the clutch drive plate. What sort of power are you running? Potentially a sports kit could solve the problems of releasing the power whilst keeping a more natural drive feel.

I actually prefer how the car drives with single than duel mass, think gear changes feel alot more acurate and presice than they did,

The main problem with duel mass flywheels is the due to the design it means the clutch has to be smaller so to harness the power it has to have a heavier pressure plate which is turn makes the clutch heavier to press down,

I fitted a uprated clutch to the duel mass flywheel on one of my previous volvos due to the standard clutch not been able to handle what the car was running, day to day it was fine but was horrible if stuck in any sort of traffic due to how heavy it was

32k miles and over 2.5yrs on my genuine G60/VR6 setup and it's still good as new.

My car is pumping out 354Nm of torque too.

I found it actually improved driveabilty. Much better feel when pulling away and shifting. Lighter pedal.

I do understand the advantages of the DMF though. I just don't like how they feel and how much they cost!

  1. thanks for your comments car is standard at the min wiyh 90 odd thousand miles i was only planning to get it mapped. the clutch has not started slipping yet but the peddle is high. will the standard fly wheel last for the lengh of another clutch ??

It all depends how its been treated, i took mine off 80k and it was fine and my clutch had started slipping altho i didnt drive it to distruction

Every car is different and it is all driver dependent.

If you are getting it remapped I would always advise moving into a paddle clutch so you can really harness the power.

The wear condition of the fly is not unrelated to the condition of the clutch but as a rule if you are changing the clutch you may as well get your mechanic to change the fly as well while he is in there, as it adds no real labour time on the job and saves having to shell out £250 extra in labour when the flywheel goes 6 months later.
