Gearbox issue? A question for DSG'ers

Featured Replies

HI Forum,

We picked up our 1.2 SE+ Yeti a few weeks ago and have really enjoyed the first 600 miles we've put on it.

I've a query about the DSG which I've searched for on here and in the handbook but can't find anything.

In a manual car, if you are driving along at a steady speed in gear and then depress the clutch, the car will rev up, then slowly surge forward when you release the clutch. This has now happened to both me and my wife independently on the Yeti: We're driving along in 'D' and then the engine suddenly revs, the car slows slightly and then slowly lurches forward as the revs drop down again. We weren't accelerating, or doing anything where the gearbox should be changing up or down.

This evening, in the display screen a white spanner icon flashed where the gear indicator usually sits. Then it disappeared. I've searched hard for this icon in the book and it doesn't appear.

So question is, is this 'normal' and we're just getting used to a new car/gearbox, or have I missed something and the clutches are about to lunch themselves?

Thanks for any advice.

I have had an Octavia with the 6 speed DSG and now a 1.2 TSi Yeti with the same DSG box as yours. I can assure you that what you experienced is NOT normal and you need to contact your dealer immediately because there is something radically wrong with the DSG gearbox. This is potentially dangerous - imagine losing power in the middle of an overtaking move or when pulling out into traffic from a side road - so don't wait but contact your dealer now.

Hi Ben - the 1.2 DSG gear changing is seamless - the only thing that you can physically tell that it has changed gear is the change in engine note (RPM). Sounds like something is definitely amiss. Refer to dealer ASAP!

The only reference to the "Spanner" symbol that I can find is in the picture on page 12: "Service Reminder Indicator". Which looks like a spanner to me.

Best of luck and keep us posted as to the results please................................Tony

I have seen the spanner symbol, from memory it appeared where the gear numbers were, but can't remember exactly.

Anyhow, my Yeti had gone into limp home mode because I gone through some deep water and made a sensor wet in the air intake.

Skoda assist (RAC) found the codes, cleared them and the car has been fine since then. The spanner disappeared when the fault code was cleared.

A DSG when in limp home mode will only go forwards in 1st gear........

Get it checked out by your dealer.

Hello are Ben C or Rockhopper still out there.

My 7 month old Octavia has just experienced the self same problem. Where the DSG gear indicator is ie. D1, D2.........and so on. The display intermitently went to a flashing spanner. The DSG gearbox is still working like a dream however at all speeds. The 1.8 tsi engine continues to pull like a train!

The dealer is totally unconcerned and unhelpful and offers to look at the car in 2 weeks time!! Has no idea what it might be.

Any chance that Ben C ever got to bottom of problem and can tell me (or any other Skoda Yeti driver who has experienced this presumably rare issue?

NB. Later the flashing spanner has now disappeared for over 30 miles driving now which appears weird.....

Tom, have you tried calling another dealer if the first one is ambivalent about the issue??

My 'spanner' did not disappear until Skoda Assist cleared the codes.

I have had no problems since.

Best advice is photograph when it happens so that you gave proof for the dealer!!!

I didn't think about it when it happened to my Yeti, and neither did Johann who was with me
