Who lets these benders drive . . .

Featured Replies

Driving to work, clear sunny day, light traffic. Come up to a Honda jeep thing on national speed limit single carriageway, its doing 40-45mph. Clear straight road, no traffic anywhere so I pull out go past at bang on 60mph, wait till there is a nice sized gap to pull into so I dont throw too much crud at his motor and carry on my merry way. He didnt flash or try to speed up at all. Over a few roundabouts and into a Industrial estate, the road into it has a school on it so the limit is 30mph, sat at 30 and he comes chugging up behind me at the same speed as he was going before and proceeds to sit 2 inches from my bumper, past the school, past the speed camera, no flashing or any issues with me, just like his on auto pilot. Then as I turn left at a mini roundabout he nearly got wiped out because he didnt look right at it. ******* douche.

I call these people 45'ers. My mother in law is one of these people, she says she finds it difficult to keep track of speed limits and so 45 seems like a good speed generally.

They tend to come out at night, they drive slowly on roads that are unlit then speed up when they come to lit sections - so they trundle along through the country and speed up through villages.

I see this too often.

Almost wiped out some young woman in a 206, as I came over a roundabout in an NSL dual carriageway, and she didn't look or even slow to pull on from a minor road, and directly in front of myself and another car.

Neither of us were going anything like the speed limit, and both stopped hard. Even with two cars on their horns and very close to her drivers door she carried on and didn't even seem to register what had just happened.

I don't know if some people are driving too tired, or just too busy doing other things, but I do think the standard of observation and driving to the conditions is pretty poor.

I think part of this is due to the do everything exactly to the signs culture we've gained, partly down to the speed cameras and the like, rather than proper driving and traffic police to pull you and have a chat if you're being daft.

I had one of these other day on way home from my mates, sat at 45 in a 60 with sod all traffic about, only problem was i had trailer on with abit of weight in it so i had no option but to sit behind said car for about 5 miles until we reached village and it turned off

Used to get these all the time through Martley, lower broadheath and the like. Road goes from 20 past schools up to 60 in places. Some sit at 45 all the way through oblivious to everything.

Whenever I head up to the scrap yard to have a look for bits I get stuck behind a 45er. It's really frustrating as there are double whites along most of the road, and when there isn't there's always something coming the other way. They carry on through all the villages on the country road though still doing 45, despite the 30 limits

Where the mother in law lives there is a junction just down the road from her where they changed the lane priorities about 5-6 years ago, it is clearly marked on the road, and with signs, which lane is straight ahead/turn right and which is turn left only. However she hasn't noticed they changed the lanes in this time. I was in her car with her driving and she went straight on from the left turn lane and someone honked their horn at her when she cut them up. I pointed out what she had done and she said she wondered why people were always beeping at her when she went through that junction.

It's like they're driving while wearing blinkers.

See this on a very regular basis (probably 2 - 3 times a day round East London).

The Sat Nav brigade are a nightmare, had a woman cut me up last night, no indicators, no looking to the left, nothing! Can only assume that she was following the lane guidance on the pratt nav and not actually looking at what she was meant to be doing. She got the full force of the horn, not out of anger but to let her know I was there, what did she do??? Bugger all - totally oblivious :@

{sarcasm = 15} But but but he wasn't speeding, so he was driving safely. {/end}

Well I was sat bang on 30, he came flying up behind me right outside the school so he was at some point. Unless you mean me?

A 45r I can cope with it's the ones who randomly vary between 30-70 on a 60. Usually braking right down for every corner before giving it a massive boot along every straight. They'll also brake every time any one drives past them on the other side of the road, especially at night. those folk are a nightmare to get past.

I drive the A85 every day and it's the waiting room for the local graveyards. I get 45rs, randomers and the living dead who trundle everywhere at 15-25mph.

It's one of the reasons I still drive the VRS and I've not changed to anything more economical. I'd never get past anyone or get to work on time if the VRS wasn't fast. I'd have to get a bike.

Matt, you did realise that I'd turned the sarcasm up to 15?

HE was taking the p*ss out of the think speed people. You know, if you're stuck to the speed limit you can't possibly be doing anything wrong, but doing 31mph in a 30 and you're a kiddy fiddling paedo, fresh out of Satan's school of bad drivers.

I dont think driving at 45mph is limited to homosexuals. I regularly see old people doing it.

Having just come back from Turkey on holiday, & spent quite a few lunch times in al fresco restaurants people & traffic watching, the standards of driving awareness & lack of road rage is light years ahead of the UK.

Despite what looks like organised chaos, faded road markings, and lots of short horn tooting ( i.e horn being used as it should be in the highway code, to say " Im here" & not otherwise), I noticed that drivers are far more aware of what is going on around them, & will even let others out of side roads without resorting to long horn blasts & frantic gesturing.

The use of telephone while driving is actually quite horrendous, & i would say over 95% of cars dont have bluetooth, & probably over 80% of phones used dont have bluetooth capability, but the near miss incidents i saw was nil.

The biggest fault with driving in the UK is the overall lack of all round awareness of other drivers by using mirrors regularly, awareness of road markings & roadsigns & correct lane use.

UK driving standards from new drivers is appalling, specially given the lack of any motorway training.

I've just come back from Italy, where people hit around 40 down narrow streets with no footpaths, but I didn't see any real close ones either. People here have been dragged into a false sense of security, and I've quite often thought that if driving was much more dangerous the roads would become a safer place for everyone.

Imagine knowing that if you have a crash you'd probably not walk away, chances are people would take more care.

Too true. Driving on roads abroad always initially seems chaotic but its only in the UK where drivers show total disregard for their fellow motorists. They will actually accelerate to stop someone being able to pull out of a junction or in from another lane. Abroad they will give way far more readily despite the fact that they all nip about in a frantic manner. Road rage is non existent over there but in this country people would kill each other if it meant someone managed to get in front of them. In this country we all become different people when behind the wheel.

They are the worst for sure. 90% of my route to work is the M1 in the Midlands - some days I drive briskly, others days I just ponder with the cruise control on. Now when the CC is on, it is amazing how the speed of other people fluctuates - I will overtake someone, pull in, then 5 mins later they charge past me, 10 mins later I overtake them again.

Happens time after time.

That does my head in. You cruise up slowly and eventually pass them. Your speed is constant. You then pull in and shortly after they are coming up behind you again so you do the decent thing and pull in only for them to start an overtake but in such a way that you have to slow down for the car in front as the person overtaking couldnt read the road ahead and see that you would need out again. This means that next time you dont bother pulling in as the same will happen again and why should you have to keep slowing down because they cant maintain a constant speed. So you sit on the outside with them up your arse untill you pass the next car, the balloon then passes you again only to be slower than you 5 minutes later with you still on cruise. The stupid thing a lot of these idiots have decent cars meaning they probably have crusie control themselves. Why would you not use it. Madness.

If someone kindly moves over to let you past i always accelerate if needs be to ensure they dont have to slow down due to upcoming cars in the inside lane. It doesnt take much brain power and at least shows some courtesy for them moving over in the first place.

They don't use it because it's of little use on UK roads for the reasons you mention above.

Touching the brakes, flicking the cancel and resume button, minor speed adjustments using the rocker switch etc.

It's easier just to turn it off and maintain the same speed with a steady right foot.

Its never easier to maintain a constant speed with accelerator than cruise. I use mine all the time as soon as i get on the motorway. Means i can relax my right leg on the foot rest. If i had to sit on accelerator my knee would be killing me very soon after. Its just irritating that others cant do the same. Use cruise then accelerate a bit harder if needed to get past someone thtas moved in for you if you can see they will get held up as a result of their actions. Common courtesy. But thats the problem no one gives a toss about other motorists. The biggets offence hwever is idiots sitting far too close to the car in front. Do they not realise this is what caused traffic jams even though there is no road works or lane restrictions. More police cars on the road would sort this. Pull these idiots over and take a note of there reg. If caught again driving like a **** then fine them. They will soon learn.

I use cruise but it is only beneficial on quiet motorways, which is a rarity these days.
