Mileage LCD display fault - Audi A8

Featured Replies

Something weird is happening to the mileage display on my A8.

The LCD is a reverse LCD style, eg. black background and the numbers are lit by turning segments off in order to let light shine through.

Now the problem, look at the attached picture which has been taken recently. If you look in the top left you can see where the permanent backing is failing for some reason. This area is not part of the display and their are no segments in this area.

The picture was taken a few weeks ago, now fast forward to today, and the damage is still spreading. Now with 180K miles on the clock the display failed area has expanded to include even more of that area, and another area has started to develop, this has all happened in the last 6 weeks.

Any idea whats happening, and can I stop it somehow. Maybe I should just replace the cluster, I can get another quiet cheap and easily but neither cluster will have the 4 digit pin to enable the immobilser to be coded, and I would need the mileage on the replacement secondhand cluster adjusted.

There are no user-servicable parts in an LCD.

If I remember from my brother octy the LCD has some kind of paint on the back. Could it be that that's peeling off?

If you can find a broken a8 in a scrappy you could probably replace the LCD

Just replace it. That's a common fault on the D3's. Had the same issue on the S8 I was fixing up last year.

I dunno what's causing it, but I did rip the cluster apart to try and fix it. Never got anywhere though.

EDIT: Saw that you had a D2, my bad. Not a big difference though. The tech inside is the same.

Looks like the lcd is delaminating. A bit like what used to happen on the old school digital watches.

At a guess you are looking at a minimum of changing the lcd but I expect this will mean breaking out the soldering iron. Otherwise its new cluster time.
