Question re 'wrapping' front grill surround.

Featured Replies

I have been very happy with my Vrs since picking it up a month or so ago, but I have a couple of niggles I want to get sorted.

one of them is that the front grill surround has been 'de-chromed' and painted black, but unfortunately it's starting to look a bit worse for wear and I want to get it sorted.

I'm thinking about having it 'wrapped' either in a good quality carbon effect, matt black or as close a match as I can get to black magic.

question is, will the wrap adhere well to a primered finish ? and how perfect does the pre-wrapped finish need to be for the wrapping to be a1 ?

thanks in advance

Primer will be ok, and it needs to be as smooth as possible to get the best finish.

Take a look at my thread about the DIY wrap I did on my vRS for pics

Get it done professionally unless you are good at stuff like that.

I got a whole grille (surround, grille and badge) from eBay for £40 delivered. Surely a surround should be cheaper than this? (Start with a "clean" surface)

Are you suggesting wrapping a new chrome surround?

I don't think you can wrap chrome effectively (which is different to applying a chrome wrap!)

I paid about £50 for the chrome surround and had it wrapped no problems. Still looks good.

Is there much stone chipping on the wrapped effect grille? I'm sick of touching up (oo er) my front grille!

I've had one minor chip in 18 months. I just touched it up with black paint!

AFAIK all the standard surrounds are chrome from the factory. And it's not real chrome. And you're only putting (essentially) sticky-back plastic on it. :)

My front bumper has taken a bashing with the chips sadly but at least the paint underneath is intact which is a plus point :)
