Cheapo SSD 60Gb

Featured Replies

Just a heads up for those who are interested.

I keep an eye on UK Hot deals most days and I spotted this.

http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/ocz-60gb-ssd-28-47-with-code-25-99-del-overclockers-1310269

OCZ Vertex 2E 60GB 2.5" SATA-II

Not the biggest fastest or best rated SSD ever but with the Voucher code it's £26.

I just ordered one for an old laptop just shy of £30 delivered 1st class.

I checked Ebuyer my ,usual source, and it's £55 there.

I'll be sticking it in an old laptop and probably installing Linux.

I've bought one, going in my ESX Server as an ISO store and pagefile area.

Half thought about getting 2 to put one as a boot drive in my win 7 desktop but I'll probably go with a full fat SATA3 if I do that.

Will get one and see if it can make my laptop bearable again. If not, into the HP Microserver it goes!

Thanks

Tempting - that's a cracking price.

Too many possible bits of kit for it to go into as well! So many choices.... :)

I've got 4 of them now: -

In my main desktop I have a Corsair Force GT 120GB and a Crucial M4 128GB

In my ESX Server I've got a Kingston SSD Now V200 120Gb one, and the Vertex 2E I'll drop in tonight. Tasty.

I saw someone moaning on the UKHD site that this drive doesn't use TRIM. I got it through and it clearly states that it does.

Moaning? UKHD? Voting 'cold'?

Whatever next! :D

I generally ignore the comments, if I'm perfectly honest. Useful site though...

Solid state storage will just get cheaper and cheaper. When I bought my first digital camera I bought a 128mb SD card for £40 thinking that it was the deal of the century. I can laugh about that now -bought a 16gb Ultra for about £8 a couple of months ago

Aye they're for comedy value only. Not many Skoda fans on that forum.

SSD will probably be the future. The new 3D chips will increase storage lots and might well see off spinning disks which seem to be getting close to the limit now.

My (pretty old) lappy has a habit of getting hot pretty quickly, it's not the battery but the fan, so am I right in thinking one of these would run cooler, and breath a bit of new life into it too ?

Get yourself an air duster (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Star-Duster-Compressed-Flammable-400ml/dp/B000MQ7DZC/ref=pd_sim_sbs_computers_1) and give it a good blow out with the back off. Probably just clogged up with dust.

An SSD will speed it up, not sure if they run any cooler though.

Daisy -there's a good chance that the fan and vents for it are full of dust - it happens to most computers sooner or later. A lot of laptops have a little cover that you can take off just to get to the fan. You should be able to clean it with a small paint brush and a vacuum cleaner. The air duster is the more professional approach but they cost about £10 a can.

Thanks chaps, will give it a clean see what happens, £30 delivered is mighty tempting still.

Theres that 120gb one going for £40 currently, but not the best reliability apparently..

Still waiting for better spec/price, but they are getting very tempting now.. Maybe xmas/new years.

Getting an SSD might cool things down a little but most of the heat is coming from the processor. So airduster / carefully clean the heatsink and fans.

And / or if it's running windows delete any unused programs and run the fragmentation, windows cleanup. and something like ASquared antimalware to make sure there is nothing running that shouldn't.

There seem to be deals on these almost daily. 120Gb is a much more usable space for a main machine. I just wanted to try the tech in an old laptop and £30 wasn't a big risk if it didn't work.

I have to say that the machine appears to frickin fly now although I'm now back to noob hell relearning Linux to get it all working.

SSDs only work to their potential on Windows 7 and Linux (with tinkering) they have some functions like TRIM that help to maintain the SSD that are not available in XP.

Thanks chaps, will give it a clean see what happens, £30 delivered is mighty tempting still.

Have got a big compressor that would give your laptop a good blowing out. ;)
