What am I doing wrong with my window regulator?

Featured Replies

I made the mistake of winding up my driver side window too fast and ended up ruining the regulator. I bought a regulator repair kit, made sure it was the correct one for my car, took off the entire door car, went to fit it and noticed that the cable was too short.

I checked the eBay listing again, turns out it was for an electric window, so I just assumed that was the problem. I ended up going to the US for a year, leaving the window held together with duct tape.

I ended up buying a new regulator, it came yesterday and I attempted to fit it when I noticed the exact same problem as before.

Looking at the two pictures below, can anyone see what I'm doing wrong? It's literally driving me insane - how can something so easy be so frigging difficult?

The plastic white winder will only fit in one way (the way that's shown in the pictures). The cable is about 4-5 inches too short. I know I'm doing something wrong! I haven't found anything on Google/YouTube so I'm all stumped :(

If you buy a new window regulator, it comes assembled (rails, winder gears, wires, slides, clamps) with the wires pretensioned. There's nothing to adjust. You just attach it to the carrier.

What did you buy?

One thing I can't see because of the clip on the winder, is if the bowden cable outers are pressing in against the springs. If they are not, it will shorten the available wire length.

4-5 inches is a lot, have you still got the "ruined" regulator bits? Could measure them up... Or a flakier suggestion, remove the other sides carrier and compare the setups. Worst case you'll have two duct taped windows though...

From the look of the bowden cables it must go like this

having had a closer look at the eBay ad. Can the outers be swapped around, either side of the regulator? If not, you've got a passenger side kit IMO.

I notice the ebay link shows pictures of both a RHS and LHS.

There should be none of the bowden inner wires visible except on the slides. If the cables are arranged as in post #6 and it still doesn't work, then it's the wrong side

Hi,

thanks for the replies! Sorry I was Lincoln for the weekend.

Yeah, I've just tried to attach it as shown by rwbaldwin and it's still about 2-3 inches too short. So I guess they have sent me the wrong side? I'll email the seller and see what he has to say, hopefully can just send him the winder piece and he'll send me the correct side.

Cheers!
