Premium Vs Standard Diesel

Featured Replies

"Premium" deisel is a complete waste of money. Additives of any kind are just asking for trouble. Put standard deisel in your tank and avoid the snake oil carp - save yourself the money and risk.

Just don't get why some people are so intent on "fiddling" with fuel chemistry

I know its not diesel but on 5th gear they ran another test the other day in a Mk6 GTI. The difference in the results were so insignificant as to make it a total waste of time. They tested 4 different fuels and had the car on a rolling road. it was an edition GTI and the the biggerst BHP reading was about 240bhp and lowest was about 236BHP from memory. What is the point in that when it cost 10p / litre more to buy. I think it is all in peoples heads and they think they can feel the difference. VBH said if there was any difference that they could feel it was because they were conducting this type of back to back test and were specifically looking for it and that on the road you wouldnt notice any difference from one day to the next if you changed fuel.

Was pretty conclusive in my eyes and seeing as the edition GTI is relatively highly tuned, then a car in a lower state of tune would probably have even poorer results on premium fuel.

It was on watchdog that the V power was just a con, thats why most shell stations have now got rid of it, and converted the pumps to normal diesel

It was Fuelsave not V-Power on watchdog. My local Shells havent had Fuelsave for a while now.

I did not see the latest 5th Gear trial but i have seen the one 6 years ago.

If people are going to start talking about 'petrol',

I do not understand why they go lumping 95 ron from a Named Supplier or a Named Supermarket as the same as 97 ron or 99 ron from

a Named Supplier or a Supermarket.

(Sainsbury Super 97 ron, Shell V Power 99 ron, Tesco Momentum 99 ron)

http://www.petrolprices.com

Momentum 99 comes from Tesco Stations and that is a Supermarket.

If you run an engine that has a Recommended petrol of '98 ron with a minimum of 95 ron',

or 95 ron with a minimum of 91 ron.

you know yourself if it makes a difference.

You have an idea if you have the type of car and drive or use it in the way that might benefit from the correct Octane of fuel.

Its everyones own choice what they buy, its easy to see yourself if you benefit or not.

Hardly matters what others think , does it?

(No clearing of the ECU this time.)

No one is saying that its not ok to do what you like, its merely a discussion on if there are tangible differences or gains. The 5th gear test was pretty conclusive but if you can think of a better way to demonstrate it scientifically then by all means share. People choose to do things for personal reasons in all aspects of life but thats not what is being discussed.

Winter fuel may now be in some Scottish Filling stations or arriving soon.

re,

Scientific tests.

They are there for anyone that bothers to look.

It is not as like Fuel Octane & Knock, etc are new to the Internal Combustion Engines.

(If to simple and not a believer in Wiki, just go Googling, maybe not on the first 20 pages of a search, go to academic & scientific Studies.)

Personally i have mostly used LPG for over a decade now.

It was Just that prices rising stopped it giving the same value/economy.

As far as Performance to price, then it was far ahead of Petroleum when used in engines built to run just LPG.

http://www.v8engines.com

I ran a 4.6 V8 just on LPG and got equal to 35 mpg on petrol in money terms,

then as it went up with increase ar 2 pence a litre, as petrol went up 2 pence a litre,

by the time i got rid of it, it was working out the same as 25 mpg on petrol, still lots of fun & performance per £, but the economy gets lost.

A nice simple test for anyone is how well a Performance enigine or just a modern one with a degree of performance runs on the higher Octane fuel in mainland Europe compared to our 99 ron fuel here.

(or not as the case my be!)

The fuel producers will happily tell people what it is they sell, they must anyway.

The motorbike always gets filled with vpower or what ever the equivelent is. You can tell the difference in the bike but I have to agree that the car (1.8 focus) doesnt even get branded fuel, i just run it on the cheapest fuel I can find in the supermarket.

When the octy arrives Ill probably go branded. No real reason other than Ive heard it produces less smoke and I figured I would try it and see. Not sure it will be worth going for the Vpower diesel though from what people on here are saying (although i might treat it on the first tank full!)

FWIW when I had my PD140 Octavia I ran it predominately on the Shell V-Power stuff as it did seem to make the thing feel a bit smoother and (probably imagined) it did seem to pull a little bit better from step-off to mid-range.

Now I have the TFSi I do run that on Super Unleaded as that's what is recomended by Skoda. I try & use V-Power as it does seem to have a bit more kick than the stuff from Sainsburys and the like but I don't think there's very much in it to be honest.

The recent 5th Gear test was interesting - it'd be enlightening to see the same test done with diesel though..
